mama bear
Yea, your wife is right, black chicken is a kind of chinese herb especially usualy use for women, but men also can eat it or drink its soup.According to the book Chinese Medicated Diet, this chicken is sweet in taste, neutral in nature (not being warming or cooling), and it benefits the kidney and liver. It is used to nourish the yin of the kidney and liver and bring down fevers that are associated with yin deficiency. Examples of medicinal applications include consumptive diseases (e.g., tuberculosis, diabetes), where there is declining body weight accompanied by leakage of fluids (sweating in tuberculosis, urination in diabetes), and other disorders marked by persistent loss of fluids: lingering diarrhea due to spleen qi deficiency, dysentery, excessive menstrual bleeding, and leukorrhea. Dan R
All I know about silkies is that they cost $8-9. for a 1 1/2# bird... But laopo loves them, so... 189014[/snapback]I was wholsaling them to a Chinese market some years ago. 8-9 $$$$$!!!!! . Roger I would suggest you get some silkie chicks and raise your own in the yard. They should be about $1.60/# like any of the exotic small birds raised commercially. I guess if it is medicinal they can charge extra. Where you live there must be a chicken farm not far away. Ask them to start raising some. You could load up a cooler full when you go to Chicago and pay for the trip In Oregon Columbia Farms was selling them. The biggest expense was bringing them in. Refrigerated freight is expensive for small shipments. http://www.geocities.com/Petsburgh/6624/ http://www.othalaacres.com/silkies/ http://www.featheracres.com/myweb/Availabl...0and%20Eggs.htm http://www.backyardchickens.com/breeds/bantams_silkies.html http://www.geocities.com/Petsburgh/Park/3826/ http://hometown.aol.com/benttreepoultry/ForSell.html So keep your flock for the monthly pot of Black Silkie Soup that many Chinese women rely on. mercator
Sorry this is OT, but I just spotted you were in Wisconsin. Any leads on good places for Ginseng? I am instructed to get 5x1.5lb packages of "American Ginseng sugar" which I think is to be translated as powdered American Ginseng. She says she can get it there for about 30RMB/lb. where we're paying that per ounce, unless I am looking in the wrong places... Unless there is really some sort of ginseng sugar / granular thing? Here is the quote from her email: "I don’t know if you allow bringing American gen-seng sugar to be together on plane. I hope you bring me 5 packages if you can. It’s about 1.5 pounds each package. I want to give them as a gift to my family members. I think it’s good to give them this because it’s special product of American. I usually use gen-seng to stewing with water or just drink together with water. It can provide enough energy and it’s not easy to feel sleeping. " I know the root is o.k., but the 'sugar' is what she would prefer, since they are mixing it with water. She said she would just get some in GZ if it is cheaper there, as long as she can find some with American packaging, but I think it would be more special to them if it actually came from the USA. I assume if it is packaged (like in a vitamin bottle) that it would clear customs, where bulk packaging might look like drugs or something Edited February 8, 2006 by mercator (see edit history) Link to comment
