Going to China

Recommended Posts

MMM :D I think I have insurance to cover periods of time I cannot work. The government would have to extend me Leave without Pay in an instance such as this.

I only have one eye left, so kissing a sick chicken is out of the question. Hey wait a minute. Would they think I was Gay, if I walked up, and kissed a farmer that was taking care of a sick chicken :D :D

<<The only company that I have heard that may hold the key to producing a effective deterrant is a small pharmaceutical in Corvallis Oregon that has Genetic sequenced Oglio Moropholino that blocks the virus from mutation. This is not a Vaccine but a compound. The companies name is Avia Bio Pharma. It is cutting edge technology and the government has just starting helping fund their research. They need to have it put on fast track for the sake of humanity. This virus could kill hundreds of millions. Sorry for the doom and gloom but it is nervous time and I am very concerned about the Avian Flu.>>

Is that Avia Bio Pharma a public company? If so, do you have the link? I can only find AVI Bio Pharma and it is located in Portland OR.

The transmission is mostly among birds, and from birds to other animals and humans. There is no human to human transmission yet. It needs to mutate a few more times before it becomes a true pandemic.

In another 2 to 4 years, maybe the strain will mutate enough to survive in human body and transmitted among humans. Or, the mutations will lessen the impact, i.e. less fatal.

Regular type of flu kills thousands of Americans every year, but the fatality rate is very low. H5N1 strain is much more potent.

There were also rumors that US Intelligence had a hand in the initial spread, several years ago, as part of the US biological warfare.

You can find it under Nasdaq with the symbol AVII. It is a antisense technology that is on the cutting edge of changing medical history. The only thing holding it back is poor management. The stock as risen on Bird Flu news and some goverment grants about a dollar in the last few weeks. If their Hep C trial is successful it should double in price from that alone. I play bio tech stocks and this one could send medical science ahead 5 to 10 years in the near future. It is the Portland Firm with labs in Corvallis.

For those who have not been watching the news, China says it will close it's borders if it finds a certain strain of the bird flu in the country.

You may be able to get there, but not back if the closure is in effect.

For the record, the references I have been able to find in China's English language media (my Chinese isn't quite up to reading newspapers in Chinese yet!) say that China will close its borders if they find an instance of human-to-human transmission of the H5N1 virus. This is a bit different from finding "a certain strain" of the bird flu.

This is from "Shenzhen Today" English language edition, 10/24:

China to shut borders if hit by flu

2005年10月24日 01:40

CHINA will shut its borders if there is a single case of human-to-human transmission of bird flu in the country, its deputy health minister has said.

Huang Jiefu said saving lives would be China’s main priority even if it meant a slowdown in the economy at a meeting for health officials from the mainland, Hong Kong and Macao in Yunnan on Friday.

He said any suspected human case would be quarantined.

Bird flu has killed 60 people in four Southeast Asian countries and has led to the deaths of tens of millions of birds since 2003. A flu pandemic would be triggered if the lethal H5N1 strain mutated into a form that could jump from human to human.

The WHO has said it may only be a matter of time before the deadly H5N1 strain develops the ability to pass easily from human to human.

Bird flu has reached as far west as European Russia, Turkey, Romania and Britain, tracking the paths of migratory birds.

Health officials from the mainland, Hong Kong and Macao also signed an agreement at the meeting to coordinate responses to outbreaks of infectious diseases such as bird flu and SARS.

Under the new agreement, the three sides must immediately inform each other when any major health emergency occurs. A joint response team has also been formed to handle any crisis.

China announced its first reported outbreak of bird flu in more than two months, saying the disease had killed 2,600 birds, mostly chickens, on a farm in its northern Inner Mongolia region Wednesday.

Health experts fear the longer the virus remains in animal populations, the more opportunity it will have to mutate into a form transmissible by humans.

They warn that if the disease, caused by the deadly H5N1 variant of the virus, reaches that stage, it could trigger a worldwide pandemic that could claim up to 150 million lives.

(SD-Agencies)

Personally, I don't think human-to-human transmission and a pandemic are imminent threats. But governments can act hastily and without thinking things through, especially after China's earlier experience with SARS.

IF China were to close its borders, there's also no telling how long or how short that nationwide quarantine would remain in place.

Those with SO's still in China who are planning their travel to the US, or those who plan to travel to China in the near future should take these factors into account.

TOO much Media hype !!!!

I have been working with this virus for close to 30 years as a Veterinarian ,and I also was an Army NBC officer

There are esssentially 2 virus types you need to worry about H5 N7 and H5 N1 ,

There is a very low probably that it will go through the recombination /mutation needed to become able to be spread Human to Human .

The 60 plus cases all came from people either intimately exposed to sick birds in the household or by eating sick birds that were improperly cooked

The H5 N7 will kill cats dead as a door nail and can be passed on from one cat to another .So there is a risk there !!!!

As far as the US Army using this and spreading it as a biological weapon , it does not meet several criteria

and also there are 8 billion birds on American farms that could get this disease - we in the US are at more financial risk - and would that the biggest losses .

Thank you for your post!! I have been worried about this problem, based on all the media hype, so it's nice to see your post, coming from someone that has years of experience and knowledge on the subject!! I've been worried the borders would close anytime now or while I am there on a 2 month trip starting late January, but that doesn't sound nearly as big a threat as I had thought after reading your post. Thanks much!!

A Chinese girl died yesterday after eating a dead, sick chicken. Her brother is ill.

I am not trying to start a panic but just thought it was something you  should be aware of.

I bet that you have a better chance of dying from Salmonella than H5 N7 and H5 N1 right now. Remember never eat a live chicken or a dead one. Cook it properly ;)

Get ready to go through the same routine each year. A few years ago it was SARS. Last year it was the flu vaccine running out. This year it's bird flu. Next year it will be something else. Today's media loves to cause panic and get people to watch. Can it happen? Of course. A lot of things can happen.

That's surprising to read a Chinese girl died from consuming a cooked chicken that had died (presumably sick from this flu? - though no confirmation). But how about the rest of the family. Why the others don't get sick. Maybe the girl and the boy got sick from handling the dead chicken to prepare it for cooking. So sad!

Right you are. The mundane doesn't sell newspapers or boost ratings. It's good to be informed, to be educated.... but it seems that too many things have too much panic packaged in them these days.

Yes, and don't eat sick animals either. Grandfather would haul away a sick cow. If she died we didn't think about butchering it; we burned it.
