rogerluli
The scariest thing imaginable has happened in our plans to return to China to live. Laopo has informed me that I have to be the driver of our car in China... I had envisaged sitting there in the passenger's seat, watching the countryside, while laopo drove us around, but this is more frightening than Alien X. I can deal with the communist government, corrupt local officials, the humidity and the HOT Hunan food...but ME dealing with Chinese traffic... I think walking, bicycling, taxis, trains and planes suddenly look a whole lot better for getting around... Link to comment

Dan R
Polite and cooperative will leave you trying to pull out from the curb all day just as sure as it would in N.Y. Just hang a sign on the car in Chinese saying "Laowai at wheel stay clear!" That should keep a clear path for you Or you can stay to the smaller towns only. Other than driving in the wrong lane I didn't see any real problem in those. No worse than the L.A. drivers when they panic because it starts raining. Link to comment
BuffaloPaul
Just drive like they do in Boston - stare straight ahead and assume everyone will move out of your way. Link to comment
skibum
Why bother with a car? I would think it would be cheaper and more convient to use a taxi. Link to comment
BuffaloPaul
Maybe what she means Roger is that you buy one of those 3 wheel bicycle/taxi cabs. You drive means you pedal I'm sure she wants to save you some money Link to comment
