  1. We started out from Nanning. First we tried the ferry, on County Road X005. It was closed for the duration - hadn't been operational in a while. Then we tried County Road X013 Little gates like this one are common in China - it is wide enough by a few inches to pass through without having to fold the mirrors.
  2. From our trip The hotel was largely vacant, although they did seem to have plenty of activity on the grounds - two weddings, a WaHaHa Guangxi convention, and one other. Only around $30-$35USD per night. Building No. 5 here is where Mao held a big CPC pow-wow back in 1958 Some of the traffic you contend with in Nanning The road to Yangmei. This one bypasses the ferry. but has major truck through traffic. Some of the potholes require evasive techniques, but nothing really undrivable like on our last trip Definitely USDA Choice ribeye . . . traffic on the way home due to an accident about 5 miles ahead. This is on a 2 lane freeway More pictures later
  3. Merry Christmas to one and a Very Merry Christmas to all. From my lovely Lao Po and me in Lovely Nanning. I hope everyone is enjoying the holidays and life. The message is a tad belated unless I can use" I am from the east coast get out of jail free card." I believe it is 11.49 PM , Christmas Day in Boston, Mass!!! Hohoho ho!! hohoho
  4. I saw this article on the internet. Never thought that this might be a concern staying at any hotel in Nanning/China: http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/newpix/2018/04/05/15/4ADA6B2100000578-5582473-image-a-29_1522940210521.jpg http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-5582473/Hotel-guest-left-coma-bitten-deadly-snake-went-trousers-leg.html http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/newpix/2018/04/06/01/4ADA6B2A00000578-5582473-Local_police_are_still_investigating_into_the_details_how_did_th-a-1_1522974110593.jpg Wish I could read Chinese.
  5. I saw this article the other day on the internet. It mentions Nanning. It talks about carbon monoxide problems in Chinese homes today. http://wcrcleaders.com/china-carbon-monoxide-deaths-html-2/ Just last week we had a problem ( in the USA) with an old carbon monoxide monitor in an apartment downstairs. Alarm went off at 1:00 in the morning on Saturday. Gas company was called. False alarm. A new monitor with a 3 digit display costs about 35 dollars from Amazon.
  6. I heard that there was flooding in the streets of Nanning a few days ago. I wonder if the rains, and flooding caused this problem: http://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-china-36375726 Googled "Rongxian county" and Wiki says that it is near Yulin. Danb Here is another video of the building collapse I just found on the net: This one is just a little longer.
  7. http://chinachristiandaily.com/data/images/full/0/52/5218.jpg Here is an article on a old church in Nanning: http://chinachristiandaily.com/2017-03-19/church/scholar-appeals-to-retain-old-church-of-guangxi_4395.html The article gives some tidbits about the church's history back to the 1930's. It is about a 10-15 minute walk from the Yong Jiang Hotel and the night food street area.. There is another western church in that area. I believe it is a Catholic type church. Danb
  8. I just read that more stops have just been added to Line 1 in Nanning: I haven't had a chance to take a ride on the new Metro (subway) yet. I hope I get a chance to. I was told that the cost is 12 yuan. I have past a couple of the entrances to the metro On Minzu Da dao. The different stops were designated as A, B, and C. Last night we traveling on Minzu Da dao on a bus. What I did noticed was that the construction above ground was cleaned up. Traffic was much better on the section that we traveled. http://www.railjournal.com/index.php/metros/chinese-cities-open-new-metro-lines.html " A further 15 stations were also added to Nanning Line 1 with a 20.9km western extension of the east-west line from previous terminus Nanhu to Shibu, which takes the total length of the line to 32.1km."
  9. Hello, Just read this article from the internet about Nanning: http://shanghaiist.com/2016/08/04/breastfeeding_metro.php The article mentions flash mobs in Nanning, the new Nanning subway, and demonstrations on the freedom of breast feeding in public in China. Things are changing both in Nanning and in China. I don't think that we would have never seen this story 30 years ago. http://shanghaiist.com/attachments/shang_shanghaiist/world_breastfeeding_week_3.jpg Notice the lady taking a selfie and also how clean the subway car looks. Danb

  11. It is shame the US doesn't start building these. Maybe if someone could get a lobbyist out of the Military-Industrial-Banking Complex it may help. http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/business/2014-09/26/content_18665280.htm
  12. Shopping at a Chinese grocery can be startling. Is that vacuum-wrapped chicken feet? Sometimes olive oil just seems necessary. When you’re hit with a desire for crusty French bread, head to one of Nanning’s Western groceries. Before buying make sure you check the expiration dates!!! http://www.echinacities.com/Nanning/city-guide/Where-to-Buy-Western-Groceries-in-Nanning
  13. Hello. Does anyone know if the bus service from the airport to Nanning's center runs 24 hour a day? I am planning a surprise trip to Nanning and will probably be arriving after 1:00 in the morning. Will I have to wait until the morning to catch a bus? I was just searching on the net and seems as if the airport actually shuts down after the last flight. I have been at the airport that late but never realized that it actually shuts down. I don't want to get stuck at the ( closed) airport. any ideas? Thank you. Danb
  14. Hi, I just got back from a unplanned trip to Nanning. The trip was too short. Just 3 weeks. Wished I had more time. Noticed a few things. Very very hot and humid in Nanning in July. This is the first time that I noticed people in China with tattoos. I never noticed them before. Also noticed the fashions. They are all over the place. And there is such a variety. Lot's of different clother, styles, patterns and coolr schemes. Also noticed a lot more "padding". Looks like the padded bra business is doing well in Nanning. Enjoyed the gathering of all the little kids with grandparent(s) outside the local KFC. Kids, they can be so fun to watch. I also went to the tallest building in Nanning. about 60 stories high. Less than 45 yuan for a ride to the top and a walk around the observation deck. It is is just behind the 5 Elephant Shopping Plaza. It is interesting to see how big Nanning is and also that it is not entirely flat around the Nanning area. On the ground I never realized those facts. Also it is sad to say that I noticed the pollution. It is not getting better and it is not going away. Also noticed that the subway is still under construction and probably won't be done this year. I also went down to the Langdong area part of town. Sound like that will be the new downtown maybe. The new Wal-mart is getting a facelift. Visited the new Embassy area that was nearby. When it is completely finished It should be a nice place to visit and stroll about. Maybe a good variety of different countries' restaurants. Consulates for the 10 ASEAN nations and I think there is also a Japanese consulate in that area. Wish I was back there. Danb
  15. I have to ask you pros about buying a house in Nanning? What are some of the ins and outs about doing this? If this come to pass it will be a year or so before this becomes a reality. My wife said a decent place will cost about 4,600 per sq. meter or a little over 10 1/2 sq feet in US conversion. The cost of living there compared to the Cincinnati Metro is about 40% less then Cincy. My home here is free and clear. Any suggestions? Here is cost of living link comparing cities world wide. If you on the blue light special Delhi, India is the lowest cost. http://www.numbeo.com/cost-of-living/compare_cities.jsp?country1=United+States&country2=China&city1=Cincinnati%2C+OH&city2=Nanning

  17. Hello everyone. I want to go from NYC to Nanning. The best prices so far that I can find is to fly into Hong Kong. Looked on United and Delta for prices and availibility. A bit high but available. The problem that I am concern is how to get from Hong Kong to Nanning ( round trip). I found some flights thru FlyChina.com. The prices weree either $300 or 429 flying with Hong Kong Airlines or China Southern. I never heard of Hong Kong Airlines going into Nanning. Has anyone ever flown with them to Nanning. Are they reliable? Two other questions. Has anyone booked flight thru Flychina.com or would I be better going thru the Airlines directly? Also how much time should I allow between my US leg and China leg portions of my flights? Is two hours enough or is that cutting too short? Do I have any other vaible and affordable options? sorry for so many questions at once. I appreciate you alls thoughts. Danb
