  1. A little more info about the interview. They only asked 3 questions How do we communicate They wanted to see the the income information Can I speak any chinese
  2. I just got the email today and she passed the interview. She will get the visa in a couple of days. She is still in Guangzhou so her email didn't have many details about the interview etc. My first email to her was 7/27/06 off of the match.com website. Almost to the day one year ago. I travelled to meet her and came back 11/5/2006 I filed the I-129 on Dec 15th 8 months later she has her visa and now I will travel back and pick her up in October. I did all of this with just the help of candlefor love and visajourney websites. She had help on her end from a broker. Got to figure out how to get them tickets and come up with that 1000 bucks for the AOS after she gets here.
  3. Actually its worry since this is my first marriage. It is a big deal pulling her away from country and faimly to come all the way over here just for me.I live a quiet life in the country and drive into the city every day to work. Don't know how she is going to adjust to not having a million people around her every day and not be able to walk to a store or understand the telemarketers calling on the phone. Your situation is almost identical to mine. First marriage for both of us. I too worry about yanking her away from everything she's known and loved her whole life and bringing her to a totally new/strange place. I'm in the burbs, not the country. But it may as well be for someone who's lived only in Shanghai and Shenzhen, two of the largest cities in China. I worry about all that every day. When I bring it up with her, she's quick to reassure me that she's coming here because she wants to be with me and be a part of the life that I live. I believe her when she says that, I don't have a choice. And I believe she will come here and do everything she can to be happy and content. And I'll do everything I can to make sure that happens. Nothing's guaranteed. But if you've done all you can to make sure you two are compatible and that you belong together before she gets here, you're off to a great start. After that you just be yourself and do all you can to make her happy and comfortable. You're both making a huge leap in your lives. She understands what's involved or she wouldn't have come so far with you. Trust her and trust yourself. Best of luck. Does your girl know how to drive? Speak good English ? Have any realtives in the states ? My girl is a 'no' on all these although she has a cousin in Toronto. I feel more like I am adopting a person rather then just marrying a girl. I have been killing myself getting my place together(fixin stuff that don't bother me but might her) There is also medical care in between the time she comes over and the time I marry. I want to use the full 90 days so she can really evaluate me and my place, plus the cost of the aos just went up to a 1000 buck after 7/31 so...I have plenty to worry about and keep myself happy. Good luck to you You're not alone. Same going on here. If it makes you feel better, I am told AOS now includes early work and travel (don't remember govt technical term but gets her work papers and ability to travel home for visit, both after only 4 or 5 months from entry?) which I planned on getting for my SO anyway. I want her to have choices real quick when she gets here. Also want her to be able to travel home if she freaks out after being here for 4 or 5 months! Not sure what South Florida is gonna do for her....I know she doesn't drink rummrunners or listen to Jimmy Buffet music.... I hope your right about that AOS thing. I have read about many SO's after being in the states a year or so return to china for a couple of months. I think this might be a good idea. Lets them know what they left and missed is still there. Sometimes the memory of something is better than the actual reality. I am this way.

  6. I filed Dec 15th had NOA2 on 3/8 Not sure when she sent the p3 stuff but 2 or 3 weeks \ Received p4 today but she did not say when the interview date is. She has a guy in shenzhen who helps her with the paperwork. I need to find out how much money she needs. I think she said she wanted to try to get this together herself
  7. Just got the email from my SO. Wow!!! Now I'm nervous I filed in Dec and got NOa2 in March. I sent her all of my stuff(I-134 etc) then, she has had her police.birth certifcates since January. We only saw each other for the 10 days I was in Shenzhen last November. Seems like a long time ago. Now I'm nervous
  8. Try Chinese Forums, a quick search should get it for you. Awesome. Thanks Flash cards http://zdt.sourceforge.net/main/wordlist_index/
  9. Are there any pimsleur pinyin translations of the audio course for course 2 manadrin?. I found some guys nots on on course 1 but want to see course 2
  10. I should have also asked ,does she go to a 'GYM'. It must be interesting to see everybody going to these gyms and still be so out of shape. In China not many gyms and everybody is skinny. I am ok for a 44 year old guy in the U.S.A but in China I am a beached whale. She drops hints in the form of being concerned for my health or talking about a kinfolks 'blood sugar' problem. I think it is funny. I sometimes wonder if the name she gave me 'Kangjie' actually means fat something or other instead of healthy and outstanding. The length of time they expect/want/wish to spend with us is directly proportional to our health.. Anything that can be done to ensure 'another day together' will be important in their eyes. --- Funny someone should just mention walking... we just got back from about a 1-2 mile walk to the supermarket.. and bought too much stuff for walking pleasure! Although we are in a chinese community, so at least we were not alone in the walking... This reminds me of when me and my SO went to meet her parents at a restraunt 'near' her apartment in Shenzhen. We were site seeing in another part of town and took the Taxi to meet them. After we ate, we walked back to the apartment 'because it was so close' I would guess we walked 1.5 miles or so and up 3 flights of steps. Her dad and mom are in there late 60's and her mom has a bad hip. They walked it like it was nothing. MY SO walked it in heels and a dress. I was sweating when I arrived because it also seemed humid on top of everything else.

  12. I'm curious. I have seen a few very large chinese kids here in America but hardly any when I was in China. How is your wife or her kids handling the weight problem with a Mcdonalds in front of them every 15 minutes and a little change in there pocket. My SO actually thinks she is fat. I said Just wait till you get to America
  13. I am on planning on buying Pimsleur ESL for Mandarin speakers when my So gets here.
  14. She was trained in nurseing in China ? Can she compare her training to american training?. I am interested in hearing how she does Yes...she went to a nursing school in Kunming and was actually a registered nurse at the hospital there. IF she ever gets brave enough to take the tests (lol) we will post how it all went. Right now, she does not think her English is yet good enough. I thinks its good enough for the "English" test. But not good enough (not enough medical words yet) for the "skills" tests. Nice thing is, once she decides to take the test...if she doesn't pass...they supposedly tell her what classes she can take and she has two years to try to retake & pass the test. For now, she passed CNA classes/test and is trying to get CNA job in hospitals here in Memphis. That way, she can get used to more of the terminology as well. And, some bigger hospitals, are rumored to be able to help transfer the license over here too (we will see about that). I'm in Little Rock so we are not to far from each other. My So is in shenzhen and is waiting for her P3 right now. Are there many Chinese living in Memphis ? I know there is a small china town in Dallas area but would be nice to find one closer
  15. To further your point: http://www.kare11.com/news/national/nation...?storyid=250421 Mind boggling but all to common. My guess is that this will get worse.

  17. Good Replys all!!! I have this idea in my head. A nursing home/village that incorparates Eastern and Western modes of medicine and treatment. I think the baby boomers are not going to be happy with living there final days in the these current models of nurseing home we have. The second thing ( and some people who have recently had parents in one of these can attest) the staffing in these places is sometimes very poor and has a high turnover. The other idea is just because of the staffing shortage of good nurses this seems like a prime route over for many Chinese.
  18. Not sure if this is the right forum. Feel free to move it. Can a nurse in china work in the USA without any additional training(other than English) ? I am wondering why we don't see more foriegners in this profession since it is such a high demand job or maybe there are but I just don't know about it. Just curious
  19. From what I've seen I would think different. Being a foriener, people would say hello to me but I wouldn't see the same response amongst each other. Also, when I saw a man physically slap his girlfriend in the face, people would look the other way as if nothing happened. Here in most cases someone would have stepped in. Also, most of us have an extremely limited view of China and have been sheltered from the "bad" areas. You might not have to worry about being shot, but I'm sure there are places you would certainly fear for your safety. As for this being stricktly "Chinese", many of these traits are alive and well in the US and Europe. Where are these places that I would fear for my safety ? I'm talking about from the chinese citizen not the government. Does china have an equivalent of St louis or Camden or Detroit ? America is 24th on the muder per capita. China is not on the list http://www.nationmaster.com/graph/cri_mur_...ders-per-capita
  20. I've gone through Pimsleur 1,2 & 3 many times and do ok with the family in China for VERY simple exchanges but I still couldn't even remotely keep up with the 4 year-old in the household over Spring Festival. Ling wants to teach me to read and write in Han zi when she arrives (we only use pinyin now). I've heard that my pu tong hua will improve rapidly as I learn to read and write properly.....I hope so. You have gone through 1 2 and 3 and still have a hard time. That is depressing. I wonder what it would take for you to become fluent. I wonder about one of those 2 month immersion progams like they have in israel for newcommers. You live with a faimly and speak it everyday. Do you have a chinese practice partner or do you just use the CD's ?
  21. I am not sure why everybody says Chinese are more rude than Americans. I never felt like I was in danger of getting shot while in China. I did feel like people knew when I walked in a room though. I didn't run into near as many sullen dead-eyed, kind of lazy service workers in China. But then again I give a lot of credit for speed and efficency. If someone can cut my hair well in 10 minutes I consider her better than someone who makes chit chat but takes 20 minutes. So maybe it is just me. I did see they are more stuborn when it came to things like rules and paperwork. They seemed like one large Italian faimly to me. Loud and proud at times but not much real threat or just for no reason. The way the coexist with such large numbers is kind of amazing. Same scenario in America would yield bloodshed
  22. Do you have any ideas on amounts I should send? I would not want to send to little as to be cheap or to much as to be thought an open wallet. Should I give the money for the matchmakers kids to her to give or directly to him?.
  23. I think it was urgent. She is haveing it done
  24. My so has been to a dentist to get some teeth issues taken care of and I wonder if I should offer to help out. She didn't ask for any but she has stayed behind in her hometown after spring festival to get teeth fixed. She just mentioned it as to why she is staying She hates and fears the dentist. Should I send money ? She also say sometimes in her letters that we should appreciate and thank the matchmaker guy(person who translates our letters) for instance after getting the NOA2. Does she mean pay something ? I think I onced asked her about this and she said some sort of no answer. I'm just wanting to make sure I not encountering some chinese indirectness or subtlety I'm supposed to pick up on. I can understand her not wanting to appear like a golddigger so that is why I am asking.
  25. Yes, Pimsleur is the best out there, and people will understand you, but the problem is when they answer at normal speed. Huh? I suppliment Pimsleur with CDs that I make myself using a small digital tape recorder. I ask my SO how to say certain words with variations in context. When I have an hours worth, I burn them on a CD. Its a nice thing to listen to on my commute. Typically I have to listen to and repeat a phrase at least 50 times before it sticks. She refuses to teach me any dirty words. I hear you! What is frustrating is to watch a Chinese movie with English subtitles. I know what they SHOULD say to convey that sentence but I can't hear it when they say it. I tried renting a chick flick Chinese film in hopes of lots of slow rhythmic speech. Zhou Yus train is the name of it. I can understand a little. It is a bit better than the Kung Fu flicks I have seen in terms of speaking. I sometimes wonder if they are actually speaking mandarin. I'm fixin to start Pimsleur 2. anybody finish that one ? I use the speech Rec sometimes for that purpose. Your idea about burning your own CD sounds good. Might make a good present My goal is to be able to achieve the ability of 6 year old chinese kid.
