  1. Do you mean Cable TV or get A cable and run it from my computer to the TV? I had Comcast cable before and it was bad! The truth is I would never go back to Cable tv. I do love my Directv. It comes through your computer-you can either have a cable from your computer or use a wireless router and the signal goes to a box on the TV. Here is the link. http://www.kylintv.com/index.asp We have it and it works fine. Thanks, I will look into this.
  2. I think this Kid has a good thing going, I wish the best of luck.

  4. I have Directv, it is very good and have had it for a few years now. The problem that I am having now is, I have an older package and as of August 25, 2008 they will stop showing CCTV9. My wife and I were watching CCTV9 the other day when on the bottom of the screen it was saying that effective 08/25/08 CCTV9 will not be available. So I called Directv only to find out that as of that day they will start new packages. We will need to choose a new package to pick up CCTV9 again. Directv is sending out all the info on the new packages, I just need to pick a package. It will probably cost me more money.
  5. I hope it gets better once it gets installed. Maybe I will have a different number to call for customer service once its installed and it doesn't go international. From what everyone on Candle says they are normal but I've hard the worst problems across the board with them! If it wasn't for my wife's grandparents I would cancel the mess all together but it will make them happy and I want to get it for them. I wouldn't put up with this for me. They told me that its VERY rare equipment for the great wall package and that's why they keep cancelling HAHA What in the world. A year or so ago I bought wifey a new HD monster size TV. I already had Dish network so I called them to upgrade my package and bring me an HD receiver. They made an appointment kinda-between 12:00 and 5:00.-No show? I called and bitched and bitched and bitched and finally talked to a supervisor who said they would be at my home first thing in the AM. He tried to tell me that they had no way to call me?? BULLSHIT--they are a communications company-they all have company cell phones and are in contact with their office etc...Once again no show and me with a year left on my original contract-Soo half day on the phone and finally I talked to someone who gave a rat's ass. I cancelled my contract with NO PENALTY and did not have to pay my final months bill- Should I decide to ever go back to them I will receive one years service for free and something else that I forgot-to compensate me for taking time off work for a no-show(ok, Lied to them about missing work so what).. I called Comcast that afternoon and had their service the next morning with NO CONTRACT!!! Making an appointment with a five hour window is bad enough but making one and not showing, with no call or anything, is unforgiveable! As for the great wall package--I got the Kylink thingy that Dan talked bout last year. A zillion Chinese channels and cheaper that the great wall!! May I ask a question? What is kylink and Where can I get it?
  6. China is sounding more like the Old Russian Soviet Empire in the bragging rights arena. Ask any Russian who ivented anything from the telephone to the airplane and their response will be Russia. That may be true. But the fact that can never be denied, is that Al Gore invented the internet. Well, not really. Al Gore wishes he did but the truth is the Internet was created way before Al Gore was old enough to know what a computer is. Here is the Facts, I quote, "Invention of the Internet Many people think that the Internet is a recent innovation, when in fact the fundamental ideas behind the Internet have been around for over a quarter century. The development of what we now call the Internet started in 1957 when the Soviet Union launched Sputnik 1, the first satellite, beating the United States into space. The powers behind the American military at the time became highly alarmed as this meant that the USSR could theoretically launch bombs into space, and then drop them anywhere on earth. In 1958 the concerns of people in the US military triggered the creation of the Defence Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). DARPA's initial role was to jump start American research in technology, find safeguards against a space-based missile attack and to reclaim the technological lead from the USSR. After only 18 months after the creation of DARPA, the Defence Advanced Research Projects Agency had developed and deployed the first US satellite. DARPA went on to have a direct contribution to the development of the Internet by appointing Joseph Licklider to head the new Information Processing Techniques Office (IPTO). It was the job of the IPTO to further the work previously done my members of the "SAGE" (Semi-Automatic Ground Environment) program and develop technologies to protect the US against a space-based nuclear attack. Licklider envisaged the potential benefits of a countrywide communications network, influencing his successors to implement his vision and to hire Lawrence Roberts who at that time was carrying out research with networks which was also being funded by DARPA. Roberts led development of the ARPANet network architecture, and based it on the new idea of packet switching. A special computer called an Interface Message Processor was developed to realise the design. The ARPANet first went live in October 1969, with communications between the University of California in Los Angeles and the Stanford Research Institute. The first networking protocol used on the ARPANet was the Network Control Program. In 1983, it was replaced with the TCP/IP protocol, which is still the standard used today. In 1990, the National Science Foundation took over management of what was then called the NSFNet, and significantly expanded its reach by connecting it to the CSNET in Universities throughout North America, and later to the EUnet throughout research facilities in Europe. Thanks in large part to the NSF's free-thinking management, and the growing popularity of the web, the nature of the Internet changed quickly in 1992, when the U.S. government began pulling out of network management and commercial entities offered Internet access to the general public for the first time. This change marked the beginning of the Internet's astonishing expansion. According to a survey conducted by CommerceNet and Nielsen Media Research in 1997, the number of users worldwide was believed to be well into the tens of millions. The so called Internet explosion coincided with the advent of increasingly powerful yet reasonably priced personal computers with easy-to-use GUI's (Graphical User Interfaces). The result was an attraction of recent computer converts to the Internet, and new multimedia capabilities, the size, scope and design of which allows users to: connect easily through ordinary personal computers exchange electronic mail with friends and colleagues post and update frequently, information for others to access access multimedia information that includes sound, photographic images and video access diverse attitudes and perspectives from around the world to directly and transparently communicate between computers Today, the Internet is not owned or funded by any one institution, organisation, or government, it is a self-sustaining widespread information infrastructure accessible to hundreds of millions of people world-wide. The Internet is, however, directed by the Internet Society (ISOC), which is composed of volunteers. ISOC appoints the IAB (Internet Architecture Board) sub-council, the appointed members of which decide on standards, network resources, and network addresses. The day-to-day issues of Internet operation is taken care by of curtsy of a volunteer group called the IETF (Internet Engineering Task Force). In brief a small number of governing boards work to establish common standards, few rules or single organisation bind the Internet, essentially the Internet is in the most part an ungoverned global network of networks. Here is more input from others: The Internet was invented by the US Department of Defence as a means of communication if we were attacked by Russia. That was in 1969. The WWW on the other hand was invented by an Englishman called Tim Berners-Lee in Switzerland in 1989. The Internet dates back to the 1950s and 60s, although few of us knew of it then as it was part of the American defence system. Some say development started in 1957 when the Soviet Union launched Sputnik 1, the first satellite. I think it's the difference between pop culture and invention that confuses people. The origins of the Internet stretch back to the 1950s and the invention of the World Wide Web to 1989, but the Internet IS a newish innovation as far as pop culture is concerned as it only really kicked into the lives of the vast majority of us after the 1989 invention of WWW. DARPA was created in 1958. But this only started the research that led to create the Internet. The Network Control Protocol (NCP) was finalized and deployed in December 1970 by the Network Working Group (NWG), led by Steve Crocker. But it was not until RFC 768 "User Datagram Protocol", RFC 791 "Internet Protocol", RFC 792 "Internet Control Message Protocol, RFC 793 "Transmission Control Protocol" were ratified in 1980 and 1981 that the Internet took shape. Modern protocols like e-mail, ftp, telnet, http ... all depend on these underlying protocols. The ARPANET host protocol was switched from NCP to TCP/IP as of January 1, 1983. The underlying protocols that run the Internet have fundamentally changed since this date. Much later on Mar. 11, 1999 Al Gore claims to have invented the Internet: "During my service in the United States Congress, I took the initiative in creating the Internet." Answer The seed of what would become the internet was created by ARPANET in 1969. It was basically a group of researchers working for the Department of Defense." and I found all this on the Internet.
  7. Have been watching, some of the shows are repeats but we still watch anyway.
  8. Ah, compassion. Was it Dave who spoke of being a reality-based, pragmatic, realist? I, myself, am a reality-based cubist, but to each his own!. Obviously, the statements made here are so obviously false that the poster could have only posted this to magnify the point about the issue that causes the problem being discussed. I think he did a masterful job. We could all take a moment to reality test our ideas before posting. So many problems could be avoided! We can all see, I think , how this poster has skillfully packaged all the errors into one brief post as a lesson to us all. We can see that if one just took a moment to ask yourself if these statements have even the remotest possibility of being true (Anything one posts? Let's go find the personal attack in Toplaws thread "This is so good...") or if you are writing about CFL or yourself (CFL is bad because some people hold liberal or progressive views that differ from mine?), you probably would have realized that what you were about to post couldn't possibly bear any relationship to reality, and one might have refrained. If one had reality tested those two ideas, then they would have likely realized who they were talking about (projecting) when they mentioned members who think they know everything! If all of us were to do this before we post, we could dramatically increase the percentage of posts that were on topic and dramatically decrease the number of posts that were merely expressions of our own non-reality-based prejudices, about China, et al. I think this poster is a genius for showing us so much in such a brief post and I hope we all take the lesson he is offering. Well said. Much better than APNWRT, which is what I considered posting. There are no words to describe this poster.

  10. My wife and I Can't agree with you more.
  11. It is obvious that saying anything here on CFL there will be personal attacks. This used to be a good forum but as I can see now it is just a Leftsided Liberal Forum. Like I said time and time again, there are certain members that think they know everything but know nothing at all! Again I said my peace, just venting!!! Later, I got things to do now.
  12. Is this a joke? What planet are you from? Curious minds want to know. Instead of just posting a flippant personal attack why don't you search around for some examples of "China bashing" to try and back up your view and then we can have a discussion as to whether it's actually bashing or just people expressing criticisms and pointing out China's flaws as Rog suggests. Or would that be too much curiosity for your planet? Here we go again!!! I have left you alone to say whatever Leftsided veiw you want to say. Now you are PERSONALLY attacking me again. HEY DON, you don't see this!!! Why don't you go and get a real life instead of hiding behind your computer for 23 hours a day on Candle!
  13. Is this a joke? What planet are you from? Curious minds want to know.
  14. Bill, I do not doubt for a moment that the majority here on this board have an extreme love for most all things China. I am certain that all of us are probably the best ambassadors China could ever dream of having. I would also venture to say that when confronted with biases about China all of us quickly go (or have gone) to China's defense and try to re-educate those who are ignorant! On the other hand, Candle is the one place where free and open discussion about the many issues relating to China can be aired without fear of being misinterpreted. Well, I would not say,"Candle is the one place where free and open discussion about the many issues relating to China can be aired without fear of being misinterpreted". I guess your posts have never been deleted like "me" and many others. This is why many people don't write much anymore only the "select" few and people wounder why there is so many guests and so few members here now that post. Maybe I am coming off hard but it is true. Then you get the PM's from people telling you that you can't say this and you can't say that. BULL, nobody tells me what I can say or not say. If you don't like it, don't read it. Everyone has a right to express there opinions, good and bad. I don't like people bashing China because I love China and I will tell you so. If people want to bash China they do have a right to say there peace but they need to expect people to defend China in return. Maybe I went a little bit but I said my peace. Later
  15. The first thing I will say is that My wife and I are not very religious. Your post here is right on. My wife opened my eyes to a beautiful Country that I love. I don't like when people bash China, it does make me very angry to read these types of posts. My wife loves her country and tells me in time we will move back and I agreed to it. I love America but I love China too. Both Countrys are not perfect, you just have to take the good with the bad. I have been to big Citys and small ones, I love them all.
  16. On my first trip to China my wife took me to the Great Wall. It is a beautiful place and we enjoyed our stay.
  17. This book in my opinion is nothing more then somebody trying to make a dollar by selling "anti Chinese propaganda". They can't even sell it, they already dropped the price and give free shipping!
  18. Hello Ms lilac: I don't think that you should become the unauthorized staff psychiatrist or fortune teller for CFL members, and create hell here ! You may know a thing or two about China, but you have not learned a thing about US culture. It is highly impolite and rude to tell someone's face in front of several hundred strangers that you two do not like each other and you will have a divorce in 1-2 years, even if that is true. Here, you do not even know us and you make a prediction ! It is outrageous ! ! I am sure that you had a divorce. How did that happen, the fortune telling person? Your husband had a divorce. How could you trust him? He could divorce you next year! How do you know? If I say that I am a fortune telling gypsy, and you two are going to die in a car accident within one year, would that make you happy knowing the reality in advance, or would that affect you in any other way regarless of the fact that it is true or not. Would you look at your husband and say " Honey, you are wearing red today. It represents blood. You will bleed to death today", even if it going to be true? Do I need to say any more? I don't think she said anything bad, all she did was express her opinion. Isn't that what we are all here for? To listen and understand from both sides of the track. We all have opinions so if you don't like what people say, I guess don't write the post. Like the old saying,"if you can't take the heat, get out of the kitchen"
  19. I'm not smart enough to understand you?? May I please see your PhD? Hi, you cant beat me there. I have one PhD in Education, one master degree in Curriculum, one bachelor's degree in language and one in Chinese. Then you will understand that I am smart enough to understand you as I have a multi major bachelors in psych/soc/bio/crim-Masters in School Psych and a PhD in Clinical. WOW!!!!! What do you do for fun!
  20. The BIG difference Jim, for us poor folk here, is that in Southland it will run you $300K for a studio condo... Prices on Hainan Island (at the same latitude as Hawaii BTW) are about 1/10th of that... Most people wouldn't look forward to working until their in their 70's for some lil' shack in SoCal. Exorbitant prices for housing, gas, food, taxes, commodities...all so you can look at some palm trees and brown hills; sit in traffic all day and tell yerself..."I've got it made baby, I'm in SoCal". And I must keep tellin' myself that...maybe it'll come true. Heck, for less than what would be a down payment on a SoCal 2,000sq.ft. lil' shack a feller could buy a 4,000sq.ft. decent sized home, live in the clear air of the picture postcard beauty of the rolling mountains in south central Pennsyltucky...where a traffic jam is more than 2 cars at a stop sign, taxes on yer decent sized home are less for the whole year than one month in SoCal, and MEN IS MEN and the wimmin understand that. Plus, if'n you need the gridlock of a big shitty, you've got Baltimore, Washington, and Philly all within a couple of hours of ya...shiver ..shiver. Yeah BABY, SoCal...spent a few weeks there, couldn't wait to escape to civilization. roGgIe, you've got a dang good plan..and YOU...ain't tied down. tsap seui For those unfamiliar with prices in China here are the ballpark figures for our Hainan place. We paid just south of $80,000 for it unfinished. Let's estimate it will run about $50,000 to finish and furnish it to a very high standard. So for $130,000 we have a 1850 sq ft condo. It has 3 Br, 3 Ba...2 master suites...2 smaller balconys...a 600 sq ft rooftop terrace (not part of the 1850)...gated community with security...elevator...11th & 12th floor...VERY low monthly fees...VERY low costs for cleaning services...VERY cheap and excellent LIVE seafood... etc, etc...Now what would this cost me in SoCal??? or more accurately, Hawaii... B) Roger, you are right about that!
  21. So are you saying there is no inbetween? My wife cooks Chinese only because she is 37 and this is what she knows how to cook. We prefer to eat Chinese because it is much healthier for you. So we are mostly on a Chinese food diet. We eat American, Vietnamese, Italian or whatever from time to time. She has been here for 3 years, loves it and her English is improving to the stage she will start massage therapy school in Spetember. So just because someone sticks to a Chinese diet does not make them anti-American. That is not what I am saying. Did you read the two posts that Ken wrote? His wife does not want to learn English and he needs to learn Chinese and she hates all American food. What will she do here if she does not know any English and refuses to learn? Eat whatever you want, I don't care. As long as you are happy that is all that counts. In my house we eat both Chinese and American. We do eat healthy and go running every night. I do believe we are all proud Americans, just with different views. Thanks This is what she says right now... having never been to the US and only getting exposed to it by McD and KFC Lucky she'll even go to the US after that experience B) Allow a person to share or spill some emotion in the moment when they feel a little insecure about an unknown future experience; she cannot see or control the future experience at this moment. Give her a year in the US and many things change. or not.
  22. I think the best thing for you to do is talk to an attorney and find out what your legal rights are. Take Care
