  1. Jay ... sorry to hear about the bump in the road.

I would get two notarized copies of the birth certificate. EMS one immediately and then try to hand deliver the other one as the guys suggest above.

Have you asked Xiao Yang if he has any suggestions?

Mr Yang, always says that if american in town push, push. American can it done much faster. I would get one in mail and try to give one at ACS and/or ACH. We even got the guard to bring some info up to VO. ACS would not help when i tried, but ACH help a lot.

  2. Speaking of gifts to bring back?

Red yeast rice extract. It is sort of funny, the big drug companies saw that red yeast rice extract helped to reduce cholesterol in people. So they analyzed it and found the active (again the drug companies must find a single or maybe two components that work well, they can not patent a natural product even it works better). Traditional Chinese med often tells people to use the red yeast to help your blood; lower LDL, raise HDL and reduce triglycerides. Just about all you need, currently none of our drugs can do all three. Than a US company actual went and proved in a double blind study that red yeast extract helps, but than the drug companies got the FDA to ban them, since the work just like their drugs. Now you can not buy the high quality red yeast extract in the US, but you get it in China. Now for the older ones of us that might need to reduce our cholesterol can use the red yeast rice extract. So good stuff to bring back. The stuff made and sold by Beijing University or Peking University.

  3. My wife received a blue, green and a pink.

I gathered all the information VO wanted and send to my wife then My wife send over to Embassy.

I think The hotel received the mail on 10th.

So, when they will be able to pick up my mail and start the procress.

and usually, how long going to take.

    She interviewed at GZ embassy.

I am going to China at the end of June. I will stay for a month.

I wish she can received the pink letter. and we can come to the US together.

anyone who had the same experiences please write down how long took you to finished yours from blue to pink.

    thank you.

These times are very unknown. Some are very fast and others drag on a long time. To guess we need to know the nature of the blue slip. What type of info were they asking for?

  4. I will return to China for the 4th time. This time isn't to to meet a new lady ( :sosad: :P ) but to meet my wife's family.

Leiqin has been in Nanning for 5 weeks now (after 7 years) and I will travel there in 2 weeks to meet her family.

She tells me that it is unnecessary for me to bring gifts, as she has already provided gifts for her family and friends.

Nevertheless, I do not want to arrive empty handed.

I am thinking of bringing giant COSTCO jars of multiple vitamins. I am also considering bringing make-up kits, cartons of US cigarettes, chocolates (her friends ate them up :P from those that she brought) and/or US Cognac, brandy or vodka.

Are these gifts worthy? Should I scratch some and bring others.

    Please, how say you?

Vitamins, Chocolates, make-up if good brands, are all good. Alcohol is good too, but you have some limits there.

Fish oil is another really hot item for older people; plus, Costco has them in large jars I bet.

US Cigarettes taste different and many chinese do not like them. Good for a try maybe.

  5. In your divorce certificate, there should be wording about 'fostering' of the child. What's it say?

The 'fostering' paragraph in a Chinese Divorce Certificate covers the 'guardianship' of the child.

If it says 100 percent foster to the Mother, then Amanda has 100 percent guardianship of the Child.

    My divorce certificate said:

My son lives with me and is supported by me. Son's father will pay 300yuan from the date of divorce till son lives himself alone.

I do not know if I have 100 percent foster to my son from this divorce certificate. :(

    Thanks for your answering.

    Amanda

I had my divorce paper work notarized today. It said :I am the custody of my son. So far I have 2 notaried paper work, one shows I am the legal guardian of my son , the other shows I am the custody of my son.

I do not know if my parper work is enough ?

    Amanda

With a notarized paper saying you have custody, you should be okay. You do not absolutely need the paper giving permission to move your son to the US, but if you can get it you will be safer. To get it we had to promise and sign a document saying we will pay for college and not ask him for money to pay for school.

  6. Question 1:

Has your son's father given his written permission for you to take your son to the USA?

    Quesiton 2:

Did you go to the GongzhengChu for the notorial certificates and the translation?

    Question 1:

    No, not yet.

    Question 2:

I went to HEILONGJIANG 公证处 for notorial certificate and the translation and got them.

The notorial certificate should be good then, but permission from the father is essential. Good luck!

It is best to get a written statement to take your son out of the country, but if you have sole custody than it is not absoutly needed. Again, it is better to get it, the conslulate might ask you to make sure you have permission to take your child. Maybe make sure the notary say you have complete or sole custody. The current wording should be okay, but the extra word (sole, complete, only) might help in case the father has any issues or tries to block the move.

  7. Biometrics tend to be shcheduled shortly after filing, and dont have influence if and when an interview will happen.

Depends on where your I-485 case is.

    • If case gets sent to your field office then expect an interview.
    • If case gets sent to California Service Center, then more than likely the case will be approved without an interview, unless the adjudicator at CSC decides an interview is needed.

You can track the I-485 on USCIS.gov

What if it just sets in Chicago with nothing being done to it?

  8. Stone,

Paying at a restaurant or convenience store with American cash should be no problem at all. Dropping a few American quarters into a Coke machine may not work, however. I know that the American machines don't like Canuck quarters, so the reverse may be true.

You should, also, have no problem purchasing subway tokens with American cash. I've never actually done that, but do not foresee it as a problem. I've often used my "leftover" American cash to make purchases when I've returned from the States.

If you're driving into Canada, you could simply stop at a gas station after entering and get a little cash at an ATM. If you're flying in, the airports have them also, as well as those "currency conversion" kiosks. Those places, however, tend to charge a higher premium than either the banks or the ATMs, as you are no doubt aware.

You ATM card will work just fine, but normally convert in the country you are going to. The USA banks are very bad at converting money (too high of a charge).

  9. Pete, Congrats! #1 Two cartons of cigarettes and two bottles of booze without duties is all I know. #2 After marriage take license, photo ID and SSN to personal banker, shouldn't be a problem to add her. #3 Haven't the faintest idea, Li kept hers.

I think it's a catch-22 situation. She won't be given the SSN until she has passed the AOS process, and what the VO will look at for proof of a genuine marriage during the AOS interview is a joint account!

That is not completely correct. She can get a ssn after 2 weeks and before her I-94 gets old or expires. I think you need some many days left on it. If you wait till after marriage you can get ssn in new name. Than file AOS and EAD after you get EAD (much faster than AOS) you can get state ID in new name with SSN number in new name.

  10. I am really perplexed. I posted this in the after-the-interview section a few days ago and would really like to get some feedback. No one apparently read it there so I am putting it here since it is really still a "first step". We got the "Call in Letter" but still no visa.

We filed our "DCF" I-130 application in late August; got to the starting gate in six months; were issued a blue card; the blue was followed by a "Call in Letter" three months later, and now, four trips to the post office after that letter, still no visa. "It not here yet" (mei you la dao), they always say.

What are they doing? Is this normal? They said we could pick it up last Friday, and now it's this Thursday, in China.

It's either incompetence (the dog ate your visa), sadism or a complete lack of consideration. We are people, and what's more, we are an American citizen and his wife. What kind of people tell someone to come and get something like that (we aren't talking a large pepperoni pizza here) and then say "not today; try again tomorrow?"

I sense-concern-fear is that they are angling for an Administrative Review or some other manner of "reconsideration". It this normal? Do they often tell people to come and get the visa they have been issued but not give it to them? Did someone look at the two of us through the one-way mirror in the Consulate's secret post office viewing room and decide we should not be permitted to be in the US? Something about my camo dew rag . . . ?

It would be great stuff for a novel if it wasn't so agonizing and so disappointing. Will they ever give it to us? I e-mailed them two days ago.

We got our Pink at the interview and than just two days later got the letter asking for more info at the post office. We heard quickly that they wanted more info.

  11. What Randy said. Get a supervisor or go to another office and print these docs out and take them with you:

    https://s044a90.ssa.gov/apps10/poms.nsf/lnx...33;opendocument

    http://www.kamya.com/ssn/em00154.pdf

And check out this page on VJ for more info:

    http://www.visajourney.com/forums/index.ph...om&page=ssn

If you haven't already, fill out this form ahead of time and take the instructions with you that include the section on Page 3 about showing the I-94 as proof:

    http://www.ssa.gov/online/ss-5.pdf

It does help with quite a few forms. Including to get a state ID in her married name. Plus, the EAD that Randy mentioned is useful even if she does not work. It helps with various ID and other cases.

  12. I think my gals should bring some trusted, common Chinese medicines with them when they come. I know that we have medicines here, but I beleive it will be reassuring for them to have medicines they know at hand. Unlike many of you, there are no major Chinese communities in all of Montana. I do have one source in the Chinese community in Calgary, but he is very expensive.

Should we mail the medicines by China Post? Should I carry them in? Or should the girls bring them when they come?

Any common Chinese medicines that might be a HUGE red flag to customs?

I have brought them in both ways. I have not had any problems yet.

  13. My wife told me she read somewhere that b4 she leaves to the US she is required to remove her name from the fukou book. Is that true? Anyone know anyting about this?

We specificly did not want to do that. She might need some of that if you buy a house later or if she keeps bank accounts. If she stays in the retirement program. Many things might require her Hukou.

  14. Thanks for the link. Is there a certain order that we should be filing some of the forms? I've already taken her to apply for her SS number yesterday. I need to get her a state ID, but I think she's forgotten to get a birth cert.

    thanks.

State ID: she needs passport and her marriage licence for new name and mabye the EAD card from the AOS filling. It depends upon the time in US. Plus, some way to prove her address. Maybe the SS card will show address. If you bring the whole piece before you cut the card out of the bigger piece of paper.
