  1. Thanks Randy. Good to be back. This will be her 5th year working in the USA. I'm puttiing a mix of 401k and Roth aside... I know the Roth will be tax free. My wife is just putting in a company 401k,... she works for Wal-mart.

We really never talked too much about her being a citizen... she is one of those ladies that China is better... I'm not sure I would feel comfortable living there for long periods of time... especially as I get older. I'm not particularlly comfortable with thier medical... not that ours is perfect, but I can understand them here, there I would depend on my wife.... plus, I have 3 kids and 4 grand kids here and I'm sure more to come at least from my 18 year old son.... none now, he's probably still a virgin, at least the last time I asked. but he will be a catch one day.

  2. This is a good topic, I'm just reading a year later.

My wife is into her 6th year of her 10 year visa. She doesn't seem interested in getting US citizenship. One reason, she says she doesn't want to pay for a visa when she wants to visit China.

I heard mention in this thread there maybe issues, in getting her SS beneifits and maybe 401K money. Can anyone elaborate

Prior to her current status expiring, she will just get another 10 years, I'm thinking. We never really talked about it seriously, but maybe now is the time to do this.

Her Dad has properties in China which will be left to her and her sister... she always says we will retire there.... I can't wrap my mind around that one, yet

  3. has anyone looked into to OOMA.com? just like Vonage, just free. You buy the box for $179. and you just pay about $3.00 a month for taxes and fees. Look at the site, ooma.com, but go to frys.com and it maybe a little cheaper. I have been toying with the idea for a month, just havent done it yet. For china calls , just buy a phone card. M wife is still using a card I bought when she was in China 4 years ago, since she uses QQ alot.

  4. I didn't see the beginning of 60 minutes last night, but it seemed the whole show was about him. It was very interesting and a good tribute. Didn't he work until the end on the show? There was a time when there talked to him about retiring and reflecting and he said what was he going to reflect about. But I didn't hear if he retired or not.

  5. Maybe you can play matchmaker and introduce sis to someone. ;)

Yeah right.....all my buddies aready see me living on the corner of the roof. <_< Do you know of someone? She is really cute and actually surpasses my wife in the anger department. She is 36 and can kick the living shit out of any man that makes her angry. Any takers Dennis? :rotfl:

Stay out of it my brother... stay out of it!

  6. Hmmm....let's see now...

Attractive twenty something woman whose got an explosive personality but is willing to give it up to anyone who will petition her to come to the US and willing to put up with her tirades and then hope and pray that she'll at least give it up once in a while in order to keep the hook embedded to keep the poor sap hoping for more...

Yeah, sounds great. Where do I sign my single (used to be) friends up? :)

Dennis, I couldn't stop laughing out loud after reading this one.

  7. Thats a really idea. I was planning to ask my doctor for Ambien for this trip. In the US I can eat anything and never have any problems. I read the symptoms of jet lag and they include diarhea, nausea, etc...so maybe the ambien will do the trick. This trip I will be staying with my sweety at her apartment so 90% of our meals will be cooked there. My dr. said to stay away from ice and fountain drinks in China which I drank both while there. Wondering if that caused me problems.

One thing that cured my jet lag was to sleep the entire time on the plane. Of course I needed medicine for this (Ambien) but it worked. I hit the ground running and was never tired.

Sounds like you are very sensitive to certain foods. Are you sensitive to any foods here in America?

Yes stay away from ice and fountain drinks. Even bottled water in some cities are not safe as they use tap water to fill the bottles. My wife was very peculiar about certain bottled waters and would not let me drink them. Your gal should know best. One thing, if it doesn't taste right then beware. Only take a sip to determime the taste. If it ain't right then don't drink it. Only eat foods that have been boiled such as noodles. If your gal know how to make soymilk then this will be a plus as well as green tea. I ate at many streetside restaurants and was not affected. Green tea as well as puer tea detoxifies the blood so this is a good thing.

Learned this lesson about the Ice in Mexico years ago... I must say my 1st trip to China I had bad Jet-Lag... not sick, just out of it.... the following 4 times I went, I started taking Jet-Lag as soon as I got on my 1st plane going to China, something I bought off the internet,,, never had problems again. As far as drink, I never drank anything but hot-tea or bottled water or something from a bottle. I never did have any problems with the food. Never ate anything strange like Dog.

  8. When I was living in China, I was having dinner with an exceptionally beautiful woman and another woman, both who were professional and spoke English. Well, the beautiful woman asked if I was learning Chinese since I was there for more then a year. I replied NO and she then said I was a usual lazy American. I don¡¯t know if she was being rude because she was use to getting her way because of her beauty or it was just the normal Chinese¡¯ way of being rude, which I observed numerous times everyday while living in China. In any case, I was insulted and embarrassed by her boorish public comment. It was the straw that broke the camel¡¯s back. I then decided to learn Chinese.

I started with a simple traveler¡¯s book ¡°15 Minutes Chinese¡± and ¡°Living Language Chinese¡±. These two books are worthless especially the ¡°Living Language¡± book since it doesn¡¯t have an index in the back for quick word lookup.

I then moved on to both Pimsleur and Rosetta Stone. Again, these non Chinese companies, which are trying to teach you Chinese are hopelessly inadequate and a waste of money. Pimsleur and Stone have slick, crafty and clever advertising campaigns but lack any real substance on the language.

I then took 2 college semesters of Mandarin which used the ¡°Integrated Chinese¡± textbook series and audio CD¡¯s. This is a great book and audio CD and gets into the nuts and bolts of the Chinese language. If you go this route, I must warn you, it requires a significant time commitment. There were a couple of US men there taking the course since they had found Chinese wives online. They were hopelessly lost after a few weeks. I would say 30 hours per week is needed.

I then moved on too having a private tutor who was from Taiwan. Wow she is great and smart and very different then Mainland Chinese women. I then started to gain a better understand and amazement on just how inadequate the Pimsleur and Stone courses are. I also start working nights and weekends at a local Chinese restaurant just to be around people who spoke Chinese. I also teach the owner's two small kids who just started learning English and they teach me Chinese.

My favor place for learning Chinese is at the CCTV website. There are several Chinese language series available there. The important difference between the CCTV series and Pimsleur and Stone is that CCTV series are designed and taught by Chinese, not a western company such as Pimsleur and Stone. The old saying ¡°you don¡¯t know what you don¡¯t know¡± is very true in learning and teaching Chinese. One additional point in CCTV language series favor over Pimsleur and Stone is CCTV is FREE !

My favor language series at CCTV are:

1 Growing up with Chinese ¨C 100 episode each 15 minutes long videos with lessons scripts in Mandarin, Pinyin and English. All are downloadable.

    2) CRI Studio (China Radio International) - Over 300 audio lessons on numerous subjects about 5 minutes long each with scripts. The Chinese woman, Yajie, who is the main teacher, has the sexist radio voice I have ever heard. I just love this series.

I also use Audacity to play all my lessons. Audacity is a free audio player and editor. It shows you the voice print just like Stone, but has many more features like slow play back and repeat segment playing.

Another Chinese language series is on YouTube is ¡°PeggyTeachesChinese¡±. Peggy is a very engaging young girl from Taiwan and a great teacher. You need to start at the beginning for her series or else you will be lost. She is a sweetheart !

Finally, over the years I have seen a number of guys here, go out and buy the Pimsleur and Stone series thinking they will learn Chinese. Then within a few months, they give up and then ask if anyone wants to buy the CD¡¯s from them. It always surprises me how many men go out and find a Chinese wife, then expect her to learn English, while they don¡¯t make any attempt or just a feeble attempt at learning a little Chinese.

I don¡¯t have a Chinese wife or girlfriend and don¡¯t have any plans for one in the future. But I study Chinese 2 or 3 hours daily. I am at the library now downloading some additional lessons from CCTV. To learn Chinese takes a substantial amount of effort. The older you are the more you have to study and practice. It¡¯s impossible to explain to you why it is so difficult. After all of this, I am only at the intermediate level now. But it gives me a sense of accomplishment that I never had before when I lived in China. Now, I love the language. I can¡¯t wait until I see that beautiful woman again, so I can tell her off in Chinese.

Men in your situation should just learn a few expressions, from CCTV, and let it go at that. Don¡¯t waste your money on those fancy CD¡¯s courses.

Very good post Bigguy. I was going to suggest the Pimsluer cd... I don't know a lot of Chinese... mostly just enough to be act like a cute monkey when I speak to a Chinese person. They are impressed but I'm very insecure knowing I can't understand anything they say when in china. You post made me think. Iam a lazy American, maybe that beautiful woman shouldn't have been so bluntm but as some american peope are very blunt so were she, seemingly she was right and it motivated you to an impressive ablility. I won't go on record to say I will commit myself to learn now, but it maybe come a NEw Years Resolution... Thanks for all the information. I'm curious, why were you in China for so long, for work?

  9. This is what they were supposed to do yesterday:

Loosing to Miami?? The Dolphins had a 7 game loosing streak, but lately they are on fire..

All the NY teams stunk up the place in the last few days. The Giants played horribly last night.

  10. We're still the Number one NY team... the rent is just cheaper across the river. It was a great game today... 3 lead changes. Glad we got the win. Hopefully we can start to get some guys back after the bye week. Our season starts to really get tough then. I was hoping you guys didn't blow us out. You guys were 0-5 this time last year... big change this year.

  11. They would have won in 1990 against the Giants if not for Scott(My Man)Norwood....wide right!

    That's NorWIDE.

    Where is he now?

Interesting story. When I watched that game, I had left NY the year before and I was living in Tulsa Okla at the time. It made me feel good that my team won. A source of gamesmanship for man conversation for many years, even yesterday. After reading that stories of how that missed opportunity changed his life and career, kind of makes you think of how important sports are in our society, world for that matter. I'm glad he landed on his feet. When all else fails, your loved ones are there for you in most cases.

I'll never forget the name, but now I won't forget how something like that can change your life even though everything went well before that incident. Janet Jackson had a song, "what have you done for me lately?"

  12. 2-0 is a good place to be. Next up, New England, I'd love to see you beat them. I really do get tired of hearing how good Brady is. He's not so good when someone is in his face. The QB gets all the Glory win winning, but the guys you don't hear about are the Offensive line, which if they are bad, the QB usually isn't so good.

  13. I worked in the World Trade Center complex in one of the smaller buildings as a teenager at the US Customs house. I was there the day when a Frenchmen walked between the 2 towers one day( I didn't know it, I saw it in the paper the next day). Frenchman walks between twin towers

It was an amazing place. malls underneath and that's where I caught my train out to Queens after work. I can remember working nights on Wall street and approaching the the buildings and looking up and feeling that I had accomplished something in my life since I escaped the grip of poverty and was providing for my young family.

One night, I was walking to the subway and a man was standing on the subway stairs pleasuring himself  ... Ididn't have to go into that entrance

I can rememeber in the summer at lunch time there would be concerts everyday. I rememeber going on fridays which was Jazz day and I saw Special EFX for the first time and liked their music.

My last job in NYC in 1989, I was one block away from the tower I don't know for sure, but I'm sure the building at 101 Barclay Street was probably damaged heavily, as it was all glass.

There were so many good and bad experiences over the years for me... the worst of course was 9/11. Still makes me mad when I see it in old movies. Still unbeleivable. Changed America forever.

  14. I drove with my wife for over a year. first helping her prepare for the driver test. which she took about 9 months after she started to learn, she passed 1st attempt. I would let her drive to work and then oneday, she drove herself to work. I would ask her to call me once she got there so I would she was ok. It wasn't as easy as it sounds, it was stressful and difficult. but what in life worthwhile is easy?

One night she called about 11:30pm and said the put up a detour  ... good thing I knew the area and was "eventually" able to tell her a different way home. Now she gets on the highway by herself, her son told me, she drives slow. I don't ride with her when she drives, she says I make her nervous. she has been driving for about 2 years now and she does well.

  15. About 7pm last night, I called Lao Po into the kitchen. A Chinese internet radio station was playing a nice slow song. When Xiaoyuan got to the kitchen, I put down my cane, grabbed her and danced the slow dance with her. It was a nice moment. :)

    Vey cool, Priceless!

May you have many more. Happy Anniversary!
