  1. http://www.mychinavisa.com/ has always done me right. They only give out 1 year, 60 day tourist visas. They even send an email when they Fed Ex my passport back the next morning. That I REALLY like.
  2. I bought an "economy" laptop for my first China trip. ACER $300 Wal-Mart Black Friday special ( 1 GB of RAM and Windows Vista Yipppeeee!). Big mistake. Crapped out on me the last day of my first trip.

  4. I saw an interesting 5 minute China customs video leaving Macau and entering China that starred Jackie Chan as a cool as ice China customs officer. I found the whole thing sort of funny. The two westerners also starring were getting all nervous and taking off their fake designer sunglasses from their heads and watches from their wrists in the cusoms line. They get pulled and Jackie Chan lectures them that when they buy fake designer products and movies in his country it hurts people in their country. We could argue that point all day and I'd probably ride the fence somewhat, but I thought it was funny that the blame was being put upon the Westerners buying the junk and that it was made to look like an under-paid China customs officer really cares what pirated products leave or enter China. Anyway, I would have absolutely nothing questionable on me if I was entering on a K1 visa or with my fiancee who was. Ying was a little sad I made her give-away a large bootleg movie collection. I wasn't. The majority of it was low-budget direct to DVD junk that had been booted. She has enough movies now of mine that will take her years to get through.
  5. You should talk to my friend Steven in Qindao. He has some kind of Chinese rock music promoter thing he is doing called Yellow Rock. Here's the Myspace.
  6. China has an official Apple store website. I think they also have an Amazon now as well.
  7. I understand . . . it's all hit or miss for me too. I did brains and intestines once. I've had chicken feet a few times. I don't hate it and I don't like it. I am just sort of like "why?"

  11. Thank God nobody was hurt. When I first started reading that story I thought it was going to be about a crowd of people stepping between the buses before they stopped. I have some China nitpicks too . . . I experienced the same as this guy on the elevators. Very frustrating. However I have another elevator story. In two buildings that I used elevators frequently in had elevators on both sides of the hallway. The problem is nobody ever synced the buttons together, so you had people pushing both buttons (and I was guilty too) to see which elevator would come first. This caused a problem because you'd be stopping on floors that had no people on them all the way down! As much as a hurry everyone is in, it seems that would be fixed. And I have a bus and taxi story. Taxi driver was dropping me off. A bus in front of him had been stopped for like 2 seconds and the driver starts to speed up around the right of the bus. Sure enough just as I predicted, a girl started to step out out of the rear bus door. Fortunately she pulled herself back in at the last second, but surely that was a predictable event for the taxi driver!
  12. I understand . . . some of those are painfully cheesy.
  13. Love those hotpots! Whenever we eat Little Sheep the waiter puts the hot side so it's easier for her to get at. And then she makes him turn it towards me. I guess they think westerners don't like hot stuff? She is from Hebei and swears nobody eats hot there. I think I am getting her into it though.
  14. I'd definitely do the I-134 notarization. I had a similar experience with the notary making some notes in the file. Some have even speculated, and I tend to agree, that they go ahead and scan in your I-134 into the computer. I think anything they can do to make things easier and eliminate some work for visa officers the day of the interview, they will do it. A couple of hundred people show up looking for visas everyday. Whenever a member on this site says they decide pass/fail before an interview, I'm pretty sure this and ACH would be a significant step towards the "pass" side! And yes the notarization was free. GOOD LUCK!!!
  15. Good to hear! Congratulations!!!
  16. Ying came home after work back in June and said to me in a super-excited voice "Honey! Honey! I saw a black today! Walking down the street!" My reply was "What do you win a prize or something?" We had a little discussion about that being maybe something she might want to say with her "inside voice" in the US. As far as your wife's Chinese preferences, some of that may sound a little more nationalistic to me than out and out racist.
  17. Good to hear from you . . . We are right behind you spending the night in HK tonight. Wondering what POE will be like for us. It will be DFW and it's probably pretty rare to see a Chinese K1 come through there.
  18. Yeah we wanted to call you guys yesterday and it got crazy with 3 people looking at our apartment. Never did sublet it out. The owner really needs to update the furniture and paint. The only thing going for that place is the location. Probably have lost the deposit, but Ying's brother still has some time to find us a renter. We'll call you soon!
  19. Happy China New Year to you guys too! Be in touch soon! Oh and speaking of what's legal in China - here's that 5 mile laser manufactured in Shanghai I told you about. http://www.wickedlasers.com/
  20. Just an update. We crossed the border and are now at the Regal Aiport Hotel - and she is pissed I am "occupying" the computer - but we did have a slight snag at HK customs. Wasn't so cut and dry on the HK side. We took a private van over and crossed the China side OK, however at the HK border crossing we had to go inside and talk briefly to an officer and show him our E tickets, passports and US visa. Whole delay took about 30 extra minutes. I think some of the extra scrutiny may be due to a company Ying worked for 5 years ago at got her a Malaysian Visa thinking she could cross into HK and work there without plane tickets to Malaysia. Didn't happen of course and the China stamp was crossed out on her passport and she was sent back until she got a proper HK passport. The officers were friendly enough and when they realized she wasn't staying in HK, the officer took the passport and stamped it. It then sat on a desk for a few minutes while another guy signed it out and waited for a girl to walk us back outside to the van and we were on our way! Anyway, we are here and I'm getting hungry. Trying to resist ordering a club sandwich from room service. Want to go out and find the HK Blu-ray of Stephen Chow's Chinese Odyssey too before I leave.
  21. They are on top of things and pro-active! I see nothing but success!
  22. Once you renew your visa, the old visa is of no use and voided. So there isn't really any overlap, because the only good valid visa is the new one. Which stinks that you can't just renew and have the extra time, especially if you are planning on specific dates and such. They didn't write VOID on it or anything. I was watching and I don't think China customs even looked at the new visa when I arrived Oct 4. Don't know why I had an F (business) visa the first time and L the second. Nobody ever said anything and I didn't request one so I just went with it.
