RECENT NEWS - THE REDESIGNED NATURALIZATION EXAM

In the interest of creating a more standardized, fair, and meaningful naturalization process, the USCIS recently completed a multi-year redesign of the U.S. citizenship exam. The revised naturalization exam, with an emphasis on the fundamental concepts of American democracy and the rights and responsibilities of citizenship, will help encourage citizenship applicants to learn and identify with the basic values we all share as Americans.

The new redesigned naturalization exam will take effect on October 1, 2008. After this date, all citizenship applicants must take the new test. Individuals that have submitted their citizenship application before October 1, 2008 but been scheduled to have the naturalization interview after October 1, 2008 can choose whether to take the current or redesigned naturalization exam. All applicants scheduled for the naturalization interview after October 1, 2009 must take the new test.

My wife will definitely take advantage of this. I talked with her last night and we will file our application September 21, 2008 beating the October 1, 2008 deadline. We were just wondering how that would work, they actually will give you a choice of test, is this because some may not have had time to prepare for the new test?

There are some excellent study guides for the new exam, many of the ESL classes have these available and offer classes on the new exam as well.

My wife brought one home and she was happier with it than the study guide for the old exam, I'll try to get the name and ISBN number next month when the classes begin again. What impressed her was the lack of complex English in the book and that it was more like a story than strict memorization which made it easier for her to remember.

My wife is taking an ESL class now, and I have told her that next year(September) she will take the Citizenship Test Preparation class they offer. I figure that if we apply in August or September she will be close to the time to take the test when the class ends at the end of January. That way things will be fresh in her mind.
