Carl
Don't quote me on this, but I think the limit is more than 2 cartons. In the Duty Free store in San Francisco you can buy boxes holding up to 10 cartons. When I went to China I asked the customs guy there, and I think he said I can take that many into the country as well as up to 5 bottles of wine, but it is something that needs to be looked into for future reference for us who travel to China Carl Link to comment

It does not specify a limit, but rather says : Reasonable amounts of money (currently up to $5,000 US), alcohol and cigarettes, cameras, and tape-recorders can be brought into China. Certain valuable items, such as amateur video and camera equipment, computers, and gold, must be declared on the form. the website is: PCW Travel: Customs, Travel Information Hope it helps Carl Link to comment

If you go over that you'll be charged a duty. I always thought the duty free limit was 2 cartons of smokes and 2 bottles of booze (1L). Looks like the answer is 1 carton and 1 bottle. Duty Free ruleWhat You Must DeclareTips for Travelers to the People’s Republic of China I found another one you might be interested in too Squeak...When to Register With the U.S. Embassy. You should register at the Consular Section of the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate: -If you find yourself in a country or area that is experiencing civil unrest, has an unstable political climate, or is undergoing a natural disaster, such as an earthquake or a hurricane. -If you plan to go to a country where there are no U.S. officials. In such cases, you should register at the U.S embassy or consulate in an adjacent country, leave an itinerary with the Consular Section, ask about conditions in the country that you will visit, and ask about the third country that may represent U.S. interests there. -If you plan to stay in a country longer than one month. -Registration at the U.S. Embassy or Consulate makes your presence and whereabouts known, in case it is necessary for a consular officer to contact you in an emergency. During a disaster overseas, American consular officers can assist in evacuation were that to become necessary. But they cannot assist you if they do not know where your are. Registration also makes it easier to apply for a replacement passport, if yours is lost or stolen. -If you are traveling with an escorted tour to areas experiencing political uncertainty or other problems, find out if registration at the U.S. embassy or consulate is being done for you by your tour operator. If it is not, or if you are traveling on your own, you should leave a copy of your itinerary at the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate soon after you arrive. Link to comment
