Randy W
More direct China-US flights on the horizon, but return to 2019 traffic far more distant Direct flights between two countries set to increase in October, a fraction of pre-pandemic routings Both Chinese and US airlines will expand their schedules, but politics and structural demand shifts may blunt enthusiasm for total resumption A passenger airplane lands in Beijing Capital International Airport on December 27, 2022. Flights between the US and China are scheduled to increase in October per an agreement between the two countries. Photo: EPA-EFE Quote Shaffia Xiong’s trip to New York almost didn’t happen. The 25-year-old Guangzhou-based businesswoman paid a consultant 3,000 yuan (US$410) for help getting a US work visa and buying a sky-high 20,000 yuan return ticket for a series of conferences – which, even at that astronomical price, required a 2.5-hour stopover in Seoul. “There are a handful of choices [of airlines] and few flights,” Xiong said. “It’s not just the high cost. There is also the long waiting list for visas to travel to the US.” Frequency of flights will increase in October, when US airlines expand their list of direct routes. But analysts expect no quick recovery to pre-pandemic numbers, pointing to strained China-US relations and uncertainty over long-term demand. The Chinese embassy in Washington referred questions about specifics to authorities in China, but said “direct flights are essential for increasing mutual visits between Chinese and American peoples. We hope that the restoration of more flights will do good to the flow of people and trade between the two countries.” After US Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s June trip to China, consistent engagement by USDOT and the State Department with Chinese officials “made this important step forward possible”, USDOT added. Martin B
A major step in the right direction: https://www.reuters.com/world/china-eases-visa-application-us-tourists-2023-12-30/ In particular: Tourist visa applicants in the U.S. will no longer need to submit air ticket bookings, hotel reservations or an invitation letter, the embassy's notice said. There was also a lot of gamesmanship around this requirement (e.g. booking refundable tickets and cancelling hotel reservations) anyways. Hopefully the US gets added to the visa-free list down the road (VERY useful now that my wife naturalized) but I wouldn't count on it. Link to comment

Randy W
It would seem that you got a rogue USCIS agent. I would approach it with that assumption, but then again - figuring out what to do can be a whole different ballgame. Best of luck. Link to comment
Randy W
Passenger flights between China, US to increase to 100/week from March 31: official from the Global Times https://www.globaltimes.cn/page/202402/1307934.shtml Chinese and US airlines will increase passenger flights from March 31, an official of the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) said on Thursday, a positive sign of flight recovery between the two countries. Starting on March 31, airlines from China and the US can operate a total of 100 scheduled round trips per week, Dai Jun, an official from the CAAC, told a press conference. It will be the biggest jump for such flights since the outbreak of the pandemic. There were three rounds of flight increases in 2023, and the most recent was from 48 to 70, starting from October.
