eseum
I live in Las Vegas and can only say that the following story does not surprise me, but it surely does amaze me (to paraphrase part of an old joke that I once heard):From The Hill https://thehill.com/homenews/state-watch/494193-las-vegas-mayor-doubles-down-on-push-to-reopen-casinos-says-its-not-her Las Vegas mayor doubles down on push to reopen casinos, says it's not her job to do it safely: 'They better figure it out'"Las Vegas mayor Carolyn Goodman (I) on Wednesday doubled down on her aggressive push to reopen the city's casinos and hotels amid the outbreak of the novel coronavirus. However, she said the responsibility would fall on businesses to ensure it was done in a safe manner. "That’s up to them to figure out. I don’t own a casino," Goodman, who previously called the closure of nonessential businesses "total insanity," said in an interview on CNN. Pressed by CNN host Anderson Cooper on why she was pushing for fully reopening the city's economy without across-the-board social distancing requirements, Goodman said it wasn't her job. "I am not a private owner. That’s the competition in this country, the free enterprise and to be able to make sure that what you offer the public meets the needs of the public," she added. "Right now, we’re in a crisis healthwise, and so for a restaurant to be open or a small boutique to be open, they better figure it out. That’s their job. That’s not the mayor’s job."" Link to comment

eseum
Installation of intense ultraviolet lights and nozzles spraying disinfectant at all casino entrances/exits ought to do the trick. Or maybe they can just issue space suits to all guests. They should be able to afford it. Sigh, maybe I just need to stop reading the news. 3 Link to comment

Bert
Would you turn down $30,000? My wife is demanding that I take it. That's what my inlaws are offering. Their view in China is that everyone is dying of Covid-19 in the US and it is not safe there. The first pitch was that it was for the airplane ticket for my wife and son to return to China plus living expenses. I refused. Then, it included me. I refused. Now, it is just money in case of an emergency. We can return it if we don't use it. My wife doesn't understand why I still refuse it. I understand their attachment o their grandson. They pretty much raised my son until he was 4. She told me once before that she regretted letting him go to the US, as though it was her choice to make. They wanted to see him last year. My wife's mother was ill. We went. A few months later, they wanted to see him again. They paid for the trip. My wife ended up leaving early after arguing with her father. They say there are no strings attached. As I told my wife, we don't need the money. If there is an emergency, I'll come up with the money to do whatever is necessary. We are not poor. They can send the money anytime should there is a need. I understand with all the propaganda in China, they feel he will be safer there. I think he is safer here than in one of the most populous cities in the world (Shanghai). There are strings attached. I think she is trying to buy her grandson. Her words haunt me, that she regretted letting him go to the US. And, my wife does have an uncle pretty high up in the food chain there. He could make trouble for me if he wanted, although I doubt he would get involved. He's a friendly guy to your face, but I always get the feeling there's someone sharpening the knife in the backroom. How old is your son? Two phrases I would never ever put together in the same sentence: "A Chinese person giving money" and "no strings attached". 1 Link to comment

eseum
Saw an article the other day where a mink farm in Denmark was closed and quarantined due to the finding that the mink tested positive for the covid19 virus. Not to be outdone, there was another article suggesting that people with dogs should have the dogs practice social distancing, due to finding a number of dogs infected with the virus. There are now predictions of meat shortages, here in the U.S., to occur in the next couple of weeks after an increase in the closure of meat processing plants. I anticipate that there will be a new run on meat at the stores this week due to this news. Meat supplies were plentiful at the store when I was there this past Sunday. Personally, this will not have an impact on my family unless it lasts for several months. We have enough frozen meat to stretch use over at least two months. I ordered online 20 pounds of bulk nut products, since the store where I usually buy in bulk at is not currently offering bulk due to the virus. We easily go through 100 pounds of nuts in a year. I was pretty happy with the online price since it was close to what I usually pay, even with shipping. I have been reading about the number of States starting to relax measures in place to fight the virus. All are seemingly hoping that their economies will recover quickly. I don't believe that it will happen. 1 Link to comment

I don't believe that it will happen. We went to Target and Trader Joe's yesterday and the Chicken was cleaned out. There were a few frozen options but passed on those as we weren't that much in need of it. All the expensive cuts of meat were still fully stocked. I later heard from a friend that there was a run on cheap meats a few days ago and Costco and other local supermarkets were sold out Link to comment
eseum
Yeah, so the Defense Production Act was invoked yesterday to order meat processing plants to stay open despite the problems they are encountering with the virus. Apparently a lot of workers aren't happy about it either, and I can't say that I blame them. Link to comment
Allon
So that makes it a natural security issue if you don't show up for work because of concern about your health. I notice no such instructions have been issued for health workers, Link to comment

Randy W
from the Shanghaiist China throws serious shade at Trump with new propaganda video on coronavirus response "China: We discovered a new virus. America: So what?" Quote China has put its considerable expertise in cartoon propaganda to use in a rather spiteful new video ridiculing the United States for its response to the coronavirus pandemic. Entitled “Once Upon A Virus,” the two-minute-long piece takes the form of a back-and-forth between China and the US over the last four months with China being represented by a Terracotta Warrior and the US by the Statue of Liberty — incidentally, both characters bear a strong resemblance to LEGO figures Edited February 24, 2021 by Randy W (see edit history) Link to comment
