Recommended Posts

ok this is most likely a silly question but I have read so much that it is confusing me so much. Wife is wanting to file for citizenship and my question is will are 15 year old son ride on her form like a greencard or will he have to file his own paperwork? Any info would be great thanks everyone.

Son will gain citizenship when mother becomes a citizen, for now only need for your wife to file her N-400 and proceed through the process.

Once she is naturalized and is a Citizen all you have to do for son will be file an N-600 to obtain his naturalization certificate, https://www.uscis.gov/n-600

The other route for son to obtain citizenship quicker would be for you his step father to legally adopt him, and once legally his parent you could file that N-600 along with evidence of adoption and he would obtain citizenship that way.

Would be cool to go to mother's oath ceremony with her son already a citizen.

N-600 is an add on for documentation. Son actually becomes a citizen, when your wife applies for the passport and brings the son along. All you need is the birth certificate showing he is her son. We just went thru N-400 and will apply for passport this week.

I still recommend N-600 for future reference, its a nice document.

When all the child has for "documentation" is a foreign birth certificate (and/or U.S. passport), well, yes - it's a good idea to have a citizenship certificate handy.

Not necessary, but a good idea nonetheless.

The only sour pill of filing that N-600 for son's certificate is the $1170 fee for the peice of paper. DANG! it has gotten quite expensive dealing with immigrations.

I cannot understand why the fee for N-600 ($1170) is more than N-400 ($725). Where does USCIS come up with this?
