Gunter Grossholz, the German picture book writer, considered the Red Flag Canal as a great project. He thought it a great thing that people in Linzhou could invest ten years in building this project making water flow slowly along a steep cliff at the time when they had to use the rudimentary tools made by themselves in the harsh environment. He showed respect for the bravery and resilience of Linzhou's people.#writer #picturebook #China #German #great #people

Known as “the Great Wall of Water”, the Red Flag Canal is a water project built by the people of Linzhou, Henan Province from the 1960s to 1970s. It was built on the side of cliffs of the Taihang Mountain to divert water from Zhanghe River to the Linzhou County.

The construction of the Red Flag Canal commenced in February 1960. A total of 300,000 people of Linzhou were mobilized to undertake the engineering work on the top of the Taihang Mountain under extremely harsh conditions for ten years. The industrious Linzhou people leveled 1,250 hilltops, erected 151 aqueducts, dug 211 tunnels, built 12,408 hydraulic structures, and excavated 22.25 million m3 of earth and rock, accomplishing a feat of water engineering.

Taking the Zhuozhang River as its source of water, the Red Flag Canal extends 1,500 km in length. The main canal wall is 4.3 m high, 8 m wide and 70.6 km long.

With simulated splits in the air, a man in black jumps high and shows different poses before landing on the ground gracefully. Sometimes, he carries a bright red silky fan while dancing or wears a shirt with long white flowing sleeves, while spreading his arms like wings in the air.
His dance is eye-catching, often attracting crowds that take pictures and ask what he is doing.
He is Chinese dancer-choreographer Ma Jiaolong, who has been making and sharing short videos of himself dancing in London since 2020. He has performed at the city's parks and iconic landmarks, such as Tower Bridge and Trafalgar Square. Ma has nearly 5 million followers on Douyin, a major short-video platform in China, known as TikTok overseas. #ChineseDance

This is typical of Guangxi land formations. The land people live on is pretty much FLAT, with some very minor elevation changes. We have a geological shelf nearby, which produces a larger elevation change, and some mountain stream-type scenery.
