I don't blame him for the "short grieving period" people are hammering him about. We lost my uncle to cancer some years ago, he died two years after being diagnosed. My aunt said that with his cancer, the grieving started the day he was diagnosed, not the day he passed away. Though publicly advertising yourself as "fairly well off" is probably not the best idea... 😬 Really hope things go well from him though I do think it'll be pretty slim pickings in Nanning with his zero Chinese ability. You'd be surprised by how many people here want to "learn English" . . ..

Randy W
He's been side-tracked - he's managed to get title to his home in Nanning, and then take a trip to the Philipines. He's the first single foreigner I know to get title tansfered to his home, giving him sole ownership on a Q2 visa. I hope he keeps that together and manages to find a track to take for his channel. He's in the Philipines, talking politics, to girls, and glue-sniffing boys. Edited May 20 by Randy W (see edit history)
Martin B
I think he's ultimately better off in a place like the Philippines or Thailand (maybe Vietnam/Malaysia as well). There's very little language barrier, a huge network of expats for support and friendship, cost of living is low (probably even lower than Nanning), and there are legitimate retirement visas available. Living in a place like Nanning with zero Chinese ability and without a Chinese spouse is incredibly difficult, if not impossible in the long term. I've also noticed a lot of hostility (anti PH/pro China of course) in the comments. My guess his channel will become a pseudo-travel channel with a sprinkling of anti-US videos to keep his Chinese viewers from fleeing. Good to see you back Randy. Martin B
Well - it's official. Kirk returned from a 4-week trip to the Philippines and literally a day later booked a one-way ticket back to Leyte Island. Kind of bittersweet seeing him leaving Nanning, but I totally understand him on this one. Being on a Q2 visa means he'll always be a 6-month guest in the country. Nanning is largely unlivable as a 60+ y/o foreigner with zero Chinese ability and no Chinese spouse. Even going to Shanghai, Guangzhou, or HK would be difficult without a more favorable visa. The biggest loss IMO is the fact that he had a great YouTube niche in China - an older retired guy living in a T2/T3 city. In the PH he'll be competing against dozens if not hundreds of well-established channels.

Sounds like he's got a Filipina honey Just got home to Nanning, China after four weeks traveling around the Philippines. I had a great time and met some really nice people. One in particular stands out more than the rest. Then today I booked a one way flight back to Tacloban, Leyte Island leaving on May 29th. The good thing about my world is I can travel and live wherever I want with basically no restrictions. So, I guess I will be living there for a while. Another great adventure. This is with Weifang Liao - his deceased wife. The Kirk we knew is no longer - the man is now staying in the PH indefinitely with his new lady. I don't see how he ever goes back to Nanning except to visit family or his deceased wife or handle some unfinished business - there's literally nothing there for him. I am surprised he sold all his Canada possessions, seems like keeping a small condo as a home base wouldn't have been the worst idea in the world... it's what I'd do. His last few videos have also taken a massive nosedive in views (except for the ones about girls/dating, which are still well below his Chinese-based vids). I wonder what happens to his channel going forward.
Randy W
On Facebook - Ok my world changes on a dime. I rented a 4 bedroom house on Leyte Island in the Philippines today. I used to run a childrens charity in China so this is nothing new to me. There is a young homeless boy that has no family that the girls and I are going to take off the street. He has not been to school and if nobody steps in and steps up he will simply not have a future. The plan is to give him a home and a family. Then get him into school and make sure he has a chance in life. Eden my partner is on board with this as she comes from a very poor background also. Wish us luck because I know this is going to be a hard road and we may crash and burn but if we don’t try then a young man’s future is not going to be good. Another great adventure but this time it’s not about fun it’s about helping others without any thought of return. Eden jumped at the idea without thought and that is why we are together. Without that zest I doubt the relationship would work. Oh man I hope this works out. from Kirk Apesland on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/share/fdBzYY3G8dzkEKY3/?mibextid=oFDknk
Randy W
Quote . . . and he talks about it on a video from Nanning The End of Gweilo 60 I am back in Nanning but only for a very short time. I have decided that a four week vacation was simply not long enough. This video will explain why I am leaving, where I am going and the future of the Gweilo 60 Channel. Martin B
Well he put up a video called "Filipina Girls Gone Wild" where he takes his new girlfriend and her friends to buy bikinis, they head to a waterpark, and drink beer. Comments absolutely ROASTED him and he's since taken the video down. Kind of a shame, I don't necessarily condone his choices but at the same time I kinda like to follow along to see what he's up to. Goes to show you that once the heavily pro-China anti-West stuff goes away, his views absolutely plummet.
