dnoblett
Brace yourselves, the censors are coming: China to renew crackdown on WeChat http://shanghaiist.com/attachments/benjamincost/wechatno.jpg In case you were wondering whether it was a good idea to start up that Tiananmen Square and/or Falungong WeChat group with your buddies, take our advice and skip it. According to state media reports last Tuesday, the CCP is planning on engaging in another month-long crackdown campaign on the popular mobile messaging application. A member responsible for the campaign (whose name has been censored, of course) released the following statement: "Some people are using this platform to disseminate negative or illegal harmful information to the public, seriously damaging the internet system [Note: What is an 'internet system'?] and hurting public interest, causing dissatisfaction among internet users." According to Reuters, this "negative or illegal information" Mr. Anonymous is referring to consists of "rumors and ideas on violence, terrorism, cheating and sex." The report added that the crackdown will mostly be targeting accounts that send information with the ability to "communicate (widely) and mobilize society." Gee, do ya think any of this is related to the upcoming 25th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square protests? This is not the first of China's WeChat crackdowns: Last September, China's supreme court announced that any so-called online rumor 'clicked and viewed more than 5000 times, or reposted 500 times' could result in up to three years in jail for the original author. Last March, dozens of popular WeChat accounts (some with hundreds of thousands of followers) were shut down with another crack of the censorship whip. Just one week prior to that, three people were arrested in Chengdu for sending messages over WeChat in regards to bird-flu related deaths in the Sichuan capital. What will those censors do next? Take away WeChat's awesome Avengers emojis? http://shanghaiist.com/2014/05/28/brace_yourselves_the_censors_are_co.php
Greg.D.
WeChat and Skype both have chat filters installed, always. But, their ability to track down and arrest people - esp before this big anniversary - is a sign of very close cooperation.Greg

Greg.D.
The WeChat Mac client is good. And, in another post, I detailed how to recover the content of your chat if you I need it for evidence purposes. In short, you extract it from the iPxx WeChat app backup on your computer.Greg
danb
Hello, I am still trying to get a handle on using Wechat. I have it loaded on my phone that has a Chinese sim card on it. At some point I would like to get it on my tablet and on my computer and also on my American phone. Talking to a friend last night and she was trying to explain what Wechat is all about. I think she is telling me that QQ Chat is like yahoo chat. I use that to chat on my computer with my LaoPo in China. Wechat sound like a chat/messenger app that is used for phones and tablets. Is that correct? When I am using Wechat on my phone can I use that with wifi or do I have to use with my phone service. I am a bit social media challenged. But I am trying to learn how to use it. I can't access you tube at the moment but I will take a look at Dan's video on using Wechat on a computer when I can. Thanks for any help you can give me. We would really like to figure out how to use Wechat. My Laopo is on it so often. Danb PS, so far I have just been able to log in wechat and have one friend on it. It is weird I could swear that I had seen my friend's wechat page a few months ago. right after she installed it for me on my phone or a tablet. I can't find it on any of my tablets. Perhaps it was on my old US phone. I just had it to exchange it for a new one a few weeks ago.
dnoblett
Wechat uses data if your phone is using WIFI them it uses the WIFI not the cellular data plan. For example wechat works fine on an iPod or iPad WIFI only device. At the time there is only an app for Mac, not for PC, in order to wechat on PC you use a web page, and log in using your cell phone by taking a picture of a QR code displayed by the web page. Your contact list should go from device to device, this is kept in the cloud in your account.
