djwalker60
Greetings: Last night my wife and I were discussing her upcoming trip to China. She told me a friend of her's in Canada was required to have a specific document from the father indicating it was OK for her friend to travel with their child to China. I've never heard of anything, but thought I'd ask any how. So, any one ever heard of anything like this? Thanks Dan Link to comment

Thanks Dan Does child have a US Passport, if your child, should have claimed citizenship, and have a US passport. Canada may have an exit control that would prevent a child leaving country without evidence of either solo custody by one parent or guardian, if two parents then proof that parent remaining behind is allowing child to leave the country may be needed for Canadians. Unfortunately the US does not have a similar restriction, though it would be a good thing, I read of some cases where a child is abducted by one parent and taken to a country that has no laws preventing or dealing with the abduction, for example Japan. http://en.wikipedia....uction_in_Japanhttp://www.time.com/...2056454,00.html IMPORTANT TO KEEP IN MIND: The United States does not have exit controls. The Department of State may not revoke a passport that has been issued to a child, but you can ask a court to hold onto it.There is no way to track the use of a passport once it has been issued.Your child might also be a citizen of another country (dual nationality). Even if he/she does not have a U.S. passport, your child may be able to travel on the other country's passport. http://travel.state....uction_580.html Edited April 27, 2011 by dnoblett (see edit history) Link to comment

I just wanted to put that question out there. I do appreciate the information and just wanted to confirm the fact that the US Does Not have exit control. By the way, from my visits to China, we all pass through Passport Control on the way out to get our Passports stamped. Does this process notate the Chinese equivalent of "exit control"? Since my son is a US Citizen, I'm sure there won't be any issues there either. ThanksDan Link to comment

ThanksDan As long as son has a US passport with a valid Chinese visa, should have no problems exiting China just like any other US citizen leaving China. Link to comment
