shenzhen
With the big Expo (aka World's Fair) in Shanghai some folks are trying to get the Chinglish fixed. Shanghai Is Trying to Untangle the Mangled English ("Cash Recycling Machine"???)It was someone's else cash and now it is yours ... thus a Cash Recycling Machine ... For the most part Chinglish at the banks, parks, govt. signs, etc. never were an issue to me. In fact it usually gives me a smile and a laugh while still allowing me to understand what they meant. What always is a pet peeve to me is to go to an expensive chinese/western resturant and find a menu that is completely worthless with the expression such as "Fried Sleeve Fish", "Jew's Ear", etc. It took me 3 months to learn that Fried Sleeve Fish was really Fried Calamari...one would think the management would spend the money and take the time to produce an accurate translation for their menu especially considering the fact that when you ask the wait staff "what is it" they don't know either. weiaijiayou
Sheesh, it's a shame that one day our children may not be able to enjoy these Chinglish signs. Next they're going to be telling Chinese businessmen that they're not allowed to roll their shirts up to their chests on hot summer days! Link to comment
TLB
One of my favorites, in the Zoo in Dalian, next to a Grizzly bear enclosure: "No Striding the Animal" -- like they REALLY had to tell me not to hop on the back of a Grizzly? After looking at the characters, I think they meant "Striking" Link to comment
weiaijiayou
Never underestimate the need for a sign with information that may seem obvious to the rest of us. Remember this?:http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/5364058.stm Some excerpts:¡°A drunken Chinese tourist says he bit a panda who attacked him after he jumped into a zoo enclosure to "hug" the bear.¡± "I bit the panda on its back but its fur was too thick," Mr Zhang recalled. He went on: "No one ever said they would bite people.¡± Link to comment
