dnoblett
Interesting commentary, but this has been tried with the Spanish speaking community. Last summer my business partner a PHD from Taiwan visited a Walart in Phoenix AZ wanting to by some shoe laces and the clerk he came across could speak only Spanish and "No English" So here is the beef, if my friend can speak 3 languages English, Mandarin, and German, why could the clerk at least understand English? The reason the USA uses English as a common language is so that all can communicate, a common language needed to be chosen English was the consensus so people moving to the USA learn the language to be able to function in the greater society, or they end up clustered in small communities like Flushing NY. I sometimes get irritated when I see signs on doors in Two languages English/Spanish, It would be even more anoying to see signs in 5 or more languages. How about English/Spanish/French/Chinese/Korean/Japanese signs saying simple things like Enter or Exit? What unifies a country is a common language, what divides is not having a common language, this is known in China where the common language is Mandarin, followed by all the local dialects. I am reposting the article. Minister
You know, oddly enough, there is no official language in the United States. Theoretically, you could post legal documents in Hindi or Mung. But, just because we accept any language doesn't mean we're any good at them. When my wife took the written driving test, she asked for the Chinese version. The translation was so bad, she had to ask for the Japanese version. The translation of that was so bad, she had to give up and take the test in English! Link to comment

weiaijiayou
At the beginning the Zhangs reminded me of about 75% of westerners in China. "Um, can you please talk to my wife/friend/colleague?" "Damn, why can't anyone in this damn place speak English??" The idea is funny since it's (I hope) tongue-in-cheek, but the thing that kinda bothers me about it is the deeper sentiment. For example, other Chinese-Canadians are referred to as "tongbao" while Western-looking Canadians are just "big nose" people and "ghosts," and their languages are "guihua." For me it just raises the question -- why even live in Canada? I know if I wanted everyone at stores and in the government in China to speak to me in English, I would not live there. Geez, instead of mobilizing armies of consumers and job applicants, just learn the language. Wouldn't that be easier??? Link to comment
