The wages for most factory workers have been cut by 35 - 50% over the past year and half. A factory worker in Chengdu that works 14 hours a day, 6 days a week will earn an average of 800 - 1000 Yuan/month. A year and a half ago, it was 1600 - 2000 a month. Link to comment

Some times when things get SO bad, you need an authoritarian government to solve them. At the risk of revisiting the China Model issue, this article is a really good read, and I recommend it highly.
