Robert S.
I know I must file a new separate I-130 for my K4 stepdaughter but have not done so yet. Does anyone know if it would be okay to go ahead and file for her EAD first? That way she could get her SSN, etc. Link to comment
Bob & Guiping
I was in the same situation with my step-daughter. She is K4 has not had a I130 filed as of yet and she has received the EAD. Just a note though, if the only purpose is to receive a SSN, the EAD is not reqiued. We had the SSN for both my wife and her daughter long before the EAD was applied for. Good luck. Link to comment
Robert S.
Thanks for your reply. When I went to the Social Security office they told me that we had to either have the EAD or just show evidence of having filed for the EAD, I am not sure. Besides this, what was your special trick to get an SSN? Link to comment
Bob & Guiping
Try a different office. We just walked in and showed the form, passport with the visa, I-94 and the lady looked up the needed information and said we would have the card in 2 weeks. We got them both in about 1 week. The lady told me K3/K4 were differnt and were allowed to have a SSN issued. I found one office that said my family could not have a SSN until they had a green card. I just tried a office in a city with many immigrants and had no problem. Hope this helps, Bob Link to comment
tywy_99
http://www.ssa.gov/ssnvisa/ I was just checking this site out and they have a contact form to e-mail questions. So I did, asking about SSN for K3. Just an automatic response or reflex due to e-mailing GZ so many times... Link to comment
Robert S.
Thanks a lot, guys, for these helpful replies. According to that SSA web site there is not reason why my K3 visaholder wife should not be able to get a SSN. But my local office says we have to wait until after we get her EAD. Link to comment

There is the memo :-) Print the SSA website section saying that, bring it to your local SSA office and demand service ! SS policies are FEDERAL, not state's little pond with a big fish in it.See my previous post. Well.. Topic says K4.... You say K3.. Which is it ?? If you have time on your hand read the new New Interim Instructions for processing SSN applications for aliens ( it's 42 page long ). Effective July 2002 Link to comment
