Joey and Yan
Thought of hiring attorney to help with the next steps after marriage , but for $1950.00, I have second thoughts and think I can do this myself with a little guidance. We get married today in South Carolina. What is the next step? Was told to go after the green card and work permit , then the SS card. Which forms do I need , where to get them and what is the proper procedure for this? Thanks all Joey and Yan Link to comment
georgeandli
What you want is AOS. Adjustment of Status. There is a pretty good list at the top of the forum. Don't worry, you can do it yourself. I did, and I ain't that smart SSN first. Go to the local office and apply. The rest you'll have to file through the mail along with $1010[?]. Link to comment
dnoblett
You are correct, save the $$$ adjusting status is not hard at all. After marriage: Get vaccinations record transferred to an I-693 by a US Civil Surgeon. File I-485, I-864, I-693, I-765 (For Work Permit), G-325A (From Chinese Citizen), and I-131 (Optional if you want a travel document to leave the USA and return while waiting for Green-Card) Everything gets mailed together to Chicago PO BOX. Notes: I-765 is coded on line 16 (C )(9 ) based on pending I-485. I-485 is based on K-1 fiancee visa. Treat I-485, I-765, and I-131 as separate applications DO NOT share any evidence (Passport pics, I-94, etc..) SIMPLE PHOTO COPIES of things like marriage cert, I-94, etc.. are fine.Guides: http://www.visajourney.com/forums/index.ph...mp;page=k1k3aoshttp://www.visajourney.com/forums/index.ph...mp;page=k1k3eadhttp://www.visajourney.com/forums/index.ph...&page=k1aos Link to comment
Joey and Yan
Should I get her the work permit first and then the SS number or should I apply the SS number and check the box for no work?? Seems like the old saying , which came first? The chicken or the egg. Link to comment

Why would you want this even if it's possible? If she is K1, you have approximately 75 days from her arrival to apply for an SSN. After that, you would have to wait for her EAD. Link to comment

Seems like the old saying , which came first? The chicken or the egg.K-1 is "Work Authorized" for 90 days after entry, so can get an SSN up to 76 days after entry, after that and they need EAD card or Green-Card to get SSN. Apply for EAD (Work permit) with adjustment of status, NOT before. EAD Based on pending AOS (I-485) costs nothing. EAD based on K-1 costs $340 and EXPIRES 90 days after entry on the K-1, A USELESS EAD. Link to comment
Guest Rob & Jin
k-1 can get work authorized SS card from the start, no need to wait for EAD. Link to comment

SSA will not issue SSN if there is less than 2 weeks validity left on the I-94. Link to comment
