The Blevins family your from Virginia ? its about family trees from a chinese perspective, ie......#1 inside auntie, fathers oldest sister, #1 ouside auntie mothers sister, inside little brother= your wifes brother to you, him outside uncle to my kids- get it. makes a interesting looking tree. but you knew that really Link to comment
Sebastian
Rob - ya - I know what yer talking about. Her mother has 5 brothers, she has 2 brothers, then there is the placement of cousins and nephews. I had to draw it out , give them roman names on paper till I figured it out. FWIW, Uncle Bob was most gracious during the visit. Link to comment
Randy W
That can be complex in reverse, as well.. Jiaying wanted to know if she is my older sister, or my younger sister. To me, they're both just sisters and are younger than me. Link to comment
Sebastian
Randy - yup. She's the baby in the family, but refers to the 'next' brother as her 'younger' brother, even she is younger than him. Made my head spin for a month, then the penny dropped. Her cousins are referred to as brothers or sisters, usually. I can cope. Edited September 21, 2008 by Darnell (see edit history) Link to comment
C4Racer
Make my head spin as they don't remotely use same terms as we do. She has one sister, yet she will talk about many sisters. Come to find out, female cousins are called sisters. So when she told me the other day, her sister will stay in Nanning and not move back to Canada. I am scratching my head. "What, your sister lives in Shenzhen." Then she explains. Come to find out her Aunt and Uncle who lived in Vancouver, BC have decided life is better in China for them. I stopped trying to figure it out. She'll help me as needed. Otherwise I'll need to check into the funny farm. As it stands, it's probably just a short trip down the road anyway. Link to comment

If you had something like older brother younger brother then.....well that language isn't it? I had no idea what you meant....really. My wife does say we need to make it a tree when we were in a geneaology class once. My wifes sisters are also a sister to her daughter and to daughter her cousins ARE here sisters and brothers. I have wanted a tree to map it out. I didn't know about big and little. I will ask next visit. Link to comment
