Could someone suggest any lawyers in Southern Cal with whom they have had a good experience? Our case is pretty straightforward but I want to at least consider the possibility of hiring a "specialist". I think the initial consultation is free for most of them anyway. I know there's a lot of people out there that feel strongly one way or the other as to whether or not to hire a lawyer. I just want to evaluate the possibility of hiring one, so if someone can recommend one that would be great! Also are there any good questions I can ask a lawyer during the initial consultation in order to help me gauge what I can expect from him/her? Thanks a lot! Carlos Link to comment

No one cares more about your case than you. There are many resources and people to help you here on CFL. Save the money for another trip to China and do it yourself. Link to comment

Save the money for another trip to China and do it yourself.I am with you on this, I did our case from initial I-129F filing all the way through I-485 for adjustment of status, saved a bundle. Lawyers are useful for handling complex issues, they cannot speed things up, and in some cases I have read they sometimes cause more problems. Anyway, if you want to go with a lawyer, from what I have read, you want one that is as close to Guz as possible, so that if for some reason you do have a problem, they can get to Guz before the documents are sent back to the NVC. At least that's my understanding. While I haven't used his services, nor am I recommending him(others will do that) Marc Ellis I believe is in the same building. I would save your money , prepare yourself, all the info is in the FAQS here, if you need a lawyer later then get one in the appropriate country for the appriate overcome/appeal, JMHO Link to comment

I at first hired someone, but after finding mistakes right off the bat, we reconsidered and found ourselves doing it all ourselves, nearly mistake free... (because Lord knows I'm not perfect, but I try!) Welcome to CFL. And use CFL and all the members advice and knowledge to your advantage. Its similar to hiring a lawyer, but free, as long as you can stand that your free lawyer is a goat. Link to comment

TineYes, I did read that in his question. But as has been pointed out, getting a lawyer state side won't do you any good since they can't handle the stuff on the fan once it hits the fan. That is the kicker. How much dedication do YOU want with YOUR application? After I saw some mistakes and carelessness, I really decided it was best to do it myself, especially after hearing the so many success stories of others. Every instance is different, but for the majority of average cases, maybe it shows more quality of an applicant that they did it themselves and pushed the limits of what they know to achieve their relationship goals. Maybe that could be a small deciding factor in a case? Link to comment
H.Woodside Posted July 30, 2008 Report Share Posted July 30, 2008 I quickly realized that hiring a lawyer to "guide" me through this maze of smoke and mirrors, gubmint' style! is like paying someone to look at MY watch and tell ME what time it is! You have to dig up all the info, get the documents ie: divorce, marriage, birth, identification, pictures, receipts, etc. and then hand them to the lawyer that will then type up a form, attach what you just gave them, and throw it in the mail for you. This to me is a secretary, not a lawyer, but nonetheless, the secretary charges as if they are a lawyer! Yep!.......sounds expensive, and who does all of the work? Link to comment
