Seriously, I hope members will help with the 'pinned' thread and help bring this to DOS/CA's attention. While the immediate threat seems to be taken care of, who knows what else may transpire? Anything we can do to get Rob and his wife togheter - in the US - benefits us all.

Then I called my wife again.  Seems in the meantime her father's been busy behind the scenes.  He's a contractor in Hechuan and, as my wife said, "He went to talk to some of his friends."  I know he knows a lot of people there.  (There were certainly a lot of people at our wedding, that's for sure!)  According to my wife, he took care of everything and there shouldn't be any problem.  I asked my wife if he had to pay any money to anyone.  She said, "Oh, I don't know!"  I said if he did I'll pay him back.  She said not to worry.

The wording of this indicates that he called on his guanxi network and that he probably did spread some money about in the right places. That is how things really get done in China. Also repaying him directly would be an insult. Just do him a big favor some day in return and more importantly, treat his daughter well.

I think the repayment comes in form of the banquet for the baby. This comes, I think, 30 or 40 days after the baby is born. It's another huge affair not at all unlike our wedding banquet. I've been to a couple here in SF for my employees. I think it also becomes another opportunity for her father to show his status in the community.

 

My wife's father is really quite a charming and wonderful man. And he's very proud of his daughter marrying this American. I'm quite lucky.
