waldowaldos
My wife and I have been married for over a year. Last year we used the First Year Choice. This year can we file a normal joint tax return and e-file? Is there anything special we need to do? My wife just received her green card last week and she does have a SSN. Thanks for all your support. Link to comment

rogerinca
As a reminder to anyone converting over from using the IRS' ITIN, to the SSA's SSN, following is extracted from my wife's notice of ITIN document: An ITIN is not a social security number, it is for federal tax purposes only, to enable an individual to file a tax return. It is issued by the IRS, not the SSA. If you currently have an ITIN, and replace it with an SSN, you must start using that number for tax purposes instead of the ITIN. ¡°Then, upon receiving the SSN, send a photo copy of the new social security card, along with a photo copy of the ¡®notice¡¯ of ITIN (which you previously received and which has the case reference number on it) to the address shown on the notice (Austin, TX 78714-9342) so that IRS can update and reconcile its records.¡± Link to comment

waldowaldos
My wife never had a ITIN number. She applied and got her SSN as soon as she arrived in the USA. So I guess we can file as normal husband and wife for 2007. Is this true? We used the First Year Choice for 2006. She did not get her green card until 2008. Link to comment
