replacing green card

Filed for her replacement card on line then called

uscis and was told it would take about 6 months to receive and

I would probably would never see it because I'll be applying

for her 10 year card in 4 months.

 

380.00 for the replacement and then 400.00 and change for her 10 year card. Wife is mad because I "wasted money", wanted to wait

out the 4 months till we apply for her 10 year card.

 

We have to schedule an infopass where we'll get a letter acting

as her temp. card till the new one arrives and she might have

to do her biometrics again.

 

She has her ss card and her state ID but no way was I taking

any chances, thinking it would just invite so many problems.

 

What would you have done?

You done good, Lou. Without that green card, she has no documentation as to legal presence. The temp card is all you need, whether the replacement arrives or not (I'll bet it will).

Definitely not a waste of money, a copy of her existing green card is part of the required documentation for removal of conditions. The letter should take care of it.

I know that the law requires LPRs to carry their GC at all times but ... my girls don't.

 

They carry color prints made from GC scans along with drivers license/student ID and US govt retired military dependent card. The only time they bring the GC is when transacting business with the government or traveling.

 

I can't imagine either of them getting into any serious trouble when they are within an hour or so of home and they have all that other ID.

 

The GC costs so much and takes so long to replace that we don't want to expose it to unnecessary (my opinion) risk.

When I was at our AOS interview I mentioned about making a copy of the green card. I was told VERY clearly that it was against the law for me to make any copy of the green card.If yan went in for a job and was hired for certain it would be copied.......just tossing this out for us to chew on a bit.....

Unfortunately, here in TN, Yaya's driver's license used to say "Not Vlid For ID" until she got her 10 year card. So, she did have to carry it around for a while.

I wouldnt take the chances either, I think you did right. What happens if she needs to fly back to China for an emergency? What about employment? It may only be 4 months now, but USCIS could screw up her 10 year card, or delay sending it. It's just better that she has it....and besides it may not take 6 months anyway, I think my wife got a replacement (due to USCIS error) in about 6 or 7 weeks.
