Orders from the wife?

Recommended Posts

Mine is convinced that I walk wrong as well. But, no orders about getting foot surgery. It sounds like you are having a lot of serious issues. Did you think about marriage counseling? If you think it is too drastic, try reading up on some of the literature out there. It sounds like the wife might be having trouble adjusting and is taking it out on you. The solution might not lie in the actual issues of ordering you, but in some other hidden problem. Good luck.

Actually I have a spur on my right heel and they will have to partially detach my Achilles tendon, remove it, then reattach and have me immobile for 10-14 days. right now I walk with a limp toward the end of the day. I just discovered another one under my left ankle which is why that ankle wants to give way with pain, I guess. So maybe I will do both feet at the same time. Wife reminded me I wont be able to drive that way. Hmm, she has a point.

Doug ... approach this surgery cautiously. Heel spurs are not a CAUSE of the problem, they are an effect. If you can prevent plantar fascia problems they go away without surgery.

In my case the "night splint" was the secret. It's like a plastic boot frame that keeps your foot flexed at 90 degrees all night. It was easy to get used to and didn't cause any real problem sleeping. The spur went away ... it's just a calcium deposit caused by the continual micro tearing of the tendon.

I now run 2 miles a day up and down some pretty steep hills. If I get a heel prob I wear the splint for a few nights. Had a buddy with the same problem, lent the splint to him, cured him also.

Look into it ... cutting is a last resort!

Doug had the same problem last year, must be a 40+ problem I guess!! :D

I tried many things but a good therapist, the right stretches and shoe inserts for around $250 was the cure. Mine was so bad that landing on my heal in the morning taught me a whole new meaning of pain!! :D ;)

Jim I have the boot already. It is very comfortable. I never thought to wear at night. It would be pretty clumsy. I don't wear during the day as I have too many people to see. I will try it though at night. Maybe you mean something different. This same boot will be used after surg. and is like the boot/cast used when I broke my ankle.

Don't know about therapy and such. I saw the X-ray and this thing looks pretty bad. I have a large lump on the back of my heel making putting on the right shoe a bit difficult.

YES a whole new meaning of pain. Especially when starting out. I did try stretches and such, but it seem to make things worse. Doc said to try the boot.

OK I will wait on whittling.

I agree - I'm in the same boat, just started with the night splint last week and it's already making a difference. Doc says it will take some time and we will probably get some custom shoe inserts molded also, but surgery is definitely a last resort. A little time in google makes it look like acupuncture is a good way to deal with the inflammation and pain in the short term. I see opinions both ways but it seems doubtful that acupuncture would actually have an effect on the cause of the spur. On the other hand, many acupuncturists also can steer you into chinese herbal approaches that might be a good way to go.

Are you guys referring to the spur under the heel or under the back of the foot? I have been reading on the net about this. Mine is a large bulge at the top of the heel on the back. I can't just flip on a shoe anymore. The back of the shoe will fold in when it hits the bulge it is so large. I kind of fear this has become so chronic I may not have a choice, which is what the doctor said.

Lately my left ankle has a big knot comming up and is bothering me a lot. I few knuckles are similar. I am beginning to think it is all calcium related as all of these things started about the same time. I guess I need to find a way to stop all the spurs, but I have doubts I can deal with the heel and ankle without surgery. I decided to go to the doc tomorrow and talk about the whole thing. Maybe a different specialist or maybe a chiropracter has a different aproach. The reading on the net gets old and not specific enough I feel.

Any advice or medications or supplements welcome!

And thanks ALL for getting me to thinking.

no, doesnt sound like we're talking about quite the same thing. My doc says it's not unusual for people to have a bit of spur and not even know it but yours sounds beyond that. The surgery I thought you were talking about is something they do to mess with the tendons/ligaments/whatever in the bottom of the foot, somewhere in the area of the arch. Sounds like youre talking more about something that would be to just remove extra calcium. By the way, a chiropractor would be right if you had spurs in the spine or hips or shoulders, which can happen, but for the feet, you really want a podiatrist.

I'm still betting there's a herbal approach that's gentler and more permanent, though it would probably take longer to complete.
