Try her Social Security card and her foreign passport (two forms of supporting documentation). We got her TDL on the same day we got the EAD.

 

edit: OK I'm confused, but we had gotten her a State of Texas ID card first. Maybe that was the secondary documentation.

 

Did your wife have a Texas learner's permit during the period between the time she arrived in America and when her EAD arrived?

We will try to find a warm face at the Gessner dps office. The Gessner DPS office I Google'd was on 12220 South Gessner. The maps shows it close to Beltway 8 and W Airport Blvd.

That's the one. If they don't let you get a learner's permit, go ahead and get the ID card. Then, when either it or the EAD comes, you should be able to get the learner's permit.

What bites my butt is that my wife, who came on a K1 visa, isn't even allowed to take the "permit" test for her Texas driver's permit until she receives her Resident Alien Card (I-551), Temporary Resident Identification Card (I-688) or her EAD.

 

A K1 visa has a I-94 that always has a maximum expriration date of 90 days.

According to the lady at the DPS office we visited today and this TXDPS website her Form I-94 must have been issued for a period of at least one year and have at least six months validity remaining.

 

Cars are a necessary evil in today's society especially in Texas. Most of us live miles away from our jobs that require transportation to make the weekday commute.

Living in a Chinese city you either walked, took a bus or a cab if 3 of you were going together.

 

How would you feel if you were unable to travel to anywhere because you aren't allowed to drive? Yes, other people can drive you places but only when they themselves have the time to drive you.

Would you feel trapped if could only "get away" from your house as a passenger in your own car?

No different in NY, most states have same standard (SSN + EAD or I-551).

 

Some will issue based on the I-94 card, but set DL expire to that of the I-94 (90 days for K-1).

 

Keep in mind driving privilege is granted at the state level, so requirements can vary.

We went to the Gessner dps office. The lady looked at her passport, her SSN card and then her I-94 card. She got up to walk over to a state trooper. When she came back she said the same thing, "I'm sorry until she gets a green card, or EAD she can't take the permit test.

 

I asked, "May I get my wife a state ID?"

She replied, "She can't get a state ID either until she gets a green card, or EAD."

I received the I-485, I-765, and I-131 NOA that are sent to you through the USPS.

I really love this country because under the section of "WHAT TO BRING TO YOUR APPOINTMENT"

it lists

• passport
  
• a driver's license
  
• a state-issued photo identification card
  

Granted, these are not the actual forms showing her case was approved for these 3 permits. I am really desiring to drive back to the DPS office to try these new "proof" of contact with USCIS(aka Immigration).
