NYTIMES
Just wanted to ask if anyone has any ideas about my lao po getting a job without a green card. She is very anxious to work and learn english. We are married 3 weeks ago and she thinks its time to work, and help with money. I want to help her find a job, but just don't know if this is the right thing to do for her, since we arrived just a little over 1 month ago in America. She has attended Zoni English School for about 1 month and that is about to end this week. Xue Ying's english is getting much better but she doesn't have the ability to hold a conversation, just bits and pieces. Also my step daughter who is 18 speaks fluent english and is trying to help mom. Any ideas here would be helpful thnks Link to comment

Depending on what she is willing to do and accounting her limited English skills, working Back-Of-House in a Chinese restaurant would be the most suitable job until she becomes more comfortable in conversing. Tony_onrock
Forget about working. It is not worth it. Get her to use the time and really catch up on the language. Link to comment

Lou and his wife live in Hoboken (sic?) is the main reason Lou comes to mind. Plus, his Nanning wife landed a job at his local supermarket just weeks after her arrival and her English was practically nil. If you're interested, send me a PM and I'll dig up Lou's email for you. jim_julian
While we can understand the desire of a Chinese wife to work and contribute the downside of being caught by law enforcement officials working illegally is enormous. This is not China. You can't "solve" the problem if you violate the law. You've gone through the legal immigration process thus far. Don't risk everything by breaking the law. As the American, you will have to gently explain to her that this would not be acceptable behavior. Link to comment

If you file for EAD before you file for AOS, you will be baseing the EAD on the K-1 visa, NOT on the AOS, and when you do this the EAD is valid only for 90 days after entry, it takes about 90 days to get that EAD, so it is a useless waste of $$. Filing for EAD WITH or after filing AOS results in a 1 year EAD card, based on the pending I-485. Link to comment
NYTIMES
Thanks, and as far as her trying to work I agree she needs to be patient after AOS is finished. How long does it take to get the AOS from the date of filing? Ben Apply for EAD (I-765) which typically takes 1-3 months to receive. Best to file for EAD when you file AOS, EAD is part of the $1010 for AOS so is a no brainier to file. Link to comment
lostinblue
I understand this very well. Yan has been here 6 months and now she has EAD card. After she was here 3 months she really wanted to work. I myself would be very carefull about "skirting the law" as we all have heard stories about some one stealing a pack of gum and getting deported. Things will work out here but it just takes time .As you are from NY. Did you come in JFK and get temp EAD? Link to comment
NYTIMES
No we flew into Newark and no EAD. Link to comment
