SirLancelot
Here is a link to the New Miss Teen USA making a pathetic fool of herself to a basic question asked during the pageant the other day: Too too funny. I just finished watching the telecast of this event with my wife about an hour ago. (It was taped.) I was shaking my head throughout Miss SC's incoherent babbling. It was pathetic. However, I'd like to point out that what's even more pathetic is that of the five finalists, the contestant who actually spoke the most eloquently of them all was Miss West Virginia and she placed 5th place. The judges should have plenty of blame, not just Miss SC. Thankfully, Miss New Jersey placed 1st runner up and she also spoke very well. Miss Colorado, the actual winner, spoke decently, but certainly wasn't the best public speaker of the five finalists. I have no idea how Miss NC and Miss SC made it to the final five. They both seem to be first class air-heads. My wife did make one comment which I thought was interesting. She said these girls haven't even graduated high school yet and that I was expecting too much from them. I took a few seconds to ponder and I have to concede that I was expecting too much from high schoolers. Miss Teen USA is after all a beauty pageant, not a speech debate contest. Miss Teen USA isn't a beauty pageant. It is a scholarship contest to promote the best and brightest. (sarcastic voice off) Link to comment
griz326
I am afraid I do not agree with your 123's of education. While teacher quality is important, parental involvement with lesson learning is far more important. My order of importance is: #1 parental involvement with lessons every night #2 discipline starting at home and continuing into the school #3 sound and focused courseware limited to reading, writing and math until a solid learning foundation is established #4 competent teachers 20 years ago it would have been difficult (maybe impossible) to baseline students in order to perform correlative analysis of teacher effectiveness; today the technology is readily available. Teachers could and should be evaluated and paid based on results they generate; unproductive teachers should be removed from the educational system. Link to comment
Guest ShaQuaNew
I am afraid I do not agree with your 123's of education. While teacher quality is important, parental involvement with lesson learning is far more important. My order of importance is: #1 parental involvement with lessons every night Sounds great in theory, but most parents are NOT involved in their children's day to day activities. The best situation is to have a school and scholastic system that instills values, discipline, education, and provides a comprehensive report to the parents. Government schools continue attempting to blame parents for poor student results, but honestly, it's the teachers job to get results. While bad parents cause more problems, most parents are not bad. But there are plenty of bad teachers and schools. #2 discipline starting at home and continuing into the school Sure, of course it begins at home. Trouble is, when the kids get to school, many of the students come from less than desireable backgrounds, with the school system allowing students whose parents and family have been involved with the criminal justice system to mix with the rest of the pack. Additionally, what used to be resolved by a simple fist fight behind the school, is seeing guns, knives, and other threats of serious bodily harm, sometimes dirtected toward family members. These behaviors are seen, and allowed my almost every single school on a day to day basis. Students exhibiting these inclinations and behaviors should be deferred to the criminal justice system. Why aren't they? Because the teachers and school board are afraid of lawsuits and community outcry from whiney ignorant parents. #3 sound and focused courseware limited to reading, writing and math until a solid learning foundation is established I challenge any Candle member to show me the shining stars of the American government public educational system that are standouts who provide a solide curriculum that includes discipline, with comprehensive lesson plans, who are backed up by the school board and community. Truth is, there are few, probably less than 15 percent that come even close. #4 competent teachers 20 years ago it would have been difficult (maybe impossible) to baseline students in order to perform correlative analysis of teacher effectiveness; today the technology is readily available. Teachers could and should be evaluated and paid based on results they generate; unproductive teachers should be removed from the educational system. In Florida, they began the FCAT a few years back. The objective was to provide a metric whereby the teacher and studen would be graded according to results. What a concept eh? Additionally, school funding was based upon acheiving good results. Another great concept. What are we saying here? Simple, reward the schools whose students and teachers do well. Fact is, it doesn't work in a whiny system where those who don't perform scream discrimination. In short, if you want and education, work for it. If you want a handout, you're likely to wind up a loser on the wrong side of the law. Link to comment
