Yes, I knew about the Yangtze River dolphin and in fact I discussed it with Lao Po and Er Mei when we were at Sea World last week.

 

The Yangtze and Jailing rivers are tremendously polluted where they converge in Chongqing. I will not eat fresh water fish when I am in China.

 

I have never seen blue sky in Chongqing. Our California blue skies are something the girls marvel over. Lao Po can remember seeing blue sky on the farm near Chongqing when she was a very small child. Eighteen year old Er Mei can never remember seeing blue sky in Chongqing.

 

I certainly hope that eventually China really makes the commitment required to clean up the environment.

I once spent a week in Beijing when it wasn't any better:

But I've been several times since that weren't nearly as bad. In many ways China reminds me a lot of big U.S. cities in the late 50's and early 60's.

That looks about like my SO's home towm, Jinan. I have visited her 6 times for a couple of weeks each time and never once I saw blue sky there...... well, once when we were on the summit of Taishan which is at a litter over 3000ft.

I cannot wait to see her reaction, when she can see the blue sky of Texas and the billion stars at night here at the ranch. I think she'll see the Milky Way for the first time in her 45 year life.

The short answer is .... "pretty much".

 

That shot was in June, which is one of the worst months. In the bad months the air pollution is so bad that I cough all the time ... like having a cold. In the good months it's a bit clearer and doesn't trigger coughing, but then I've also seen it where you couldn't even see across the river.

 

The Chongqing area has a lot of coal burning factories, which I think contribute quite a bit to the pollution levels. The water in the river and in the ponds where people raise fish looks and smells polluted. I'd bet the heavy metal pollution in the water is also high. I'll visit Chongqing but I'd never live there. It's no surprise to me that so many die of cancer and respiratory disease.

My wife is simply amazed at the CA blue sky as well. She says the only thing she doesn't miss about SH is the weather and constant grey sky. She's amazed at the stars at night we're able to see here as well.
