Failed Driving Test

Recommended Posts

This is pure speculation on my part but wouldn't they just want a translater that knows sign language? I found this link that says they allow interpreters for deaf people in NJ

http://www.state.nj.us/mvc/pdf/Licenses/Dr...l/Chapter_2.pdf

Texas allows interpreters for the written test, but not for the driving test.

How do they give the driving test to the deaf then? Federal law mandates that they can't be denied a drivers license based on being hearing impaired.

Same way they give it to the Chinese - pointing. Jiaying didn't even want to bother driving 5 miles to Chinatown for the test.

Chinese pointing?

just joking

The one in Chinatown would have a Chinese test inspector for the driving part?

This same thing happened to my wife when she went for her driving test. The examiner would not let me translate from her language into something Ping could understand.

The black lady state trooper with a heavy accent told Ping to:

getinthecar-crankitup-turnonthelights-leftturnsignal-rightturnsignal-steponthebrake-andhonkthehorn.

It really did sound like one word. She let her drive the car around in a circle to get it out of the way and said she failed and that she should "learn to speak English" before coming back, as if she were the standard for proper English.

We had driven all the way to Birmingham, over an hour's drive, because that was the only station that was testing foreigners. I of course was furious. My family is a little bit politically connected and I was trying to think what I could get my father and uncle to do when I had the idea just to call the examining office and ask to speak to the officer in charge. He told me when that when we came back he wanted us to come in his office and talk to him. We did, and he assigned a very pleasant fellow to give Ping the test which she passed just fine.

I wanted to file a complaint against the black lady who was prejudiced against Asians but I just let it go, hoping that the state troopers would do a better job of policing themselves.

Not really totally in line with the topic here, but...over and over again I stressed to my beautiful bride that a common trick by the driving examiner is to "forget" to fasten his/her seatbelt upon entering the vehicle. We live in Indiana and if the driver taking the exam does not require the examiner to buckle-up they fail right on the spot. Dang, if her examiner didn't do exactly that, he "forgot" to buckle his safety belt. Rong was on to him and politely asked him to fasten his safety belt, which he did. The exam went ahead without any problems and she is now a "first-time driver." Just a "heads up" to those who may be taking their exam soon.

Just reading this old topic. Reminds me of another scheme they pulled in PA years ago. You would pull up to the line to take your drivers test, the officer would make the other person leave, and do the signal test. Then the officer would ask you to pull the car forward and pick them up. TRAP! If driving with a permit, you are not allowed to drive without another licensed driver in the front seat... The minute you move the car, is the minute you fail the test. I know two people personally that fell for this TRAP..
