We had this discussion in ESL tonight. Mary and I explained that Sunday is Mother's Day and I was asked if I will be taking Leiqin out to eat on Sunday. I told them that that was her son, Ning's, responsibility. My responsibility is to my mother. Some were shocked that I would be so cavalier about not celebrating my wife being a mother. I had to explain how the TRADITION is for the children to honor their mothers, not for husbands to honor their wives who happen to be mothers. OK, they then asked if I would be spending Sunday with MY mother. :( And, No, I will not. Why? It is Mother's Day and you will not be with your mother??? All eyes on me. OK, my mother is 84 years old. She fell and broke her hip, earlier this year. My father is 86. I told them how I travel every two months and Leiqin and I go to COSTCO and buy meat and veggies to stock them up for several months and that we don't need to travel so often to be sure they are OK...sigh ;) And, that every day is Mother's Day for my mother and me. Cripes, big guilt trip now... sigh again...

OK, yes, Mother's Day is a day to celebrate ALL mothers including our wives and SOs.

Sorry mom, I can't be with you Sunday. You know my heart is with you, just the same. I love you, mom. Dennis

For Mother's Day this year I got Lao Po a daughter.

Er Mei is arriving on her K2 this evening. The three of us will be beaming in church on Sunday morning. In the afternoon we'll make a food run to 99 Ranch to assure Er Mei she's not really in a barbarian country.

The only problem is I'm not sure how to top this next year ...

The original Mother's Day, begun with a proclamation by Julia Ward Howe (the person who wrote "Battle Hymn of the Republic"), was established as a day in which all mothers the world over would hereby stand up and refuse to let another child die in another war ever.

Nice idea. I wonder how we never get that as part of the message of Mother's Day today? Just how did we get from "Mother's standing up against war" to "pamper mom day"????

Who raised you, Curt?

What's that got to do with what I wrote??????

Curt, allow me...I'll take a stab...

Although most of your posts are concise, accurate and even poignant, we have become conditioned to be ready for and to accept a negative post from you. Seldom (I cannot remember ever) do you post something of a POSITIVE nature, thus the question (I am proposing) why always so negative?

There is nothing negative about what I wrote. I asked a question about the evolution of Mother's day. It was meant to be something very different by the person that created it. Asking how it changed is not a negative question unless you are predisposed to believe anything I say will be negative. Thank You very much. Maybe it's time to conclude I'm not socially acceptable around here and stick to immigration topics only. I don't want to hijack this thread this way so I guess the appropriate thing to do us shut up and withdraw from this topic altogether.

I agree with you on this one.
