New Chinese passport laws

Recommended Posts

My wife's passport is expiring soon. It used to be you could send it to the Chinese consulate and have it extended. Then they changed it to where you could no longer extend it or send it to the consulate but you could send it to a visa agency to have them take it to be renewed. Now you must go to the consulate in person unless you are over 65, under 12 or you are medically unable to make the trip. Looks like we will be going to San Francisco before too long.

Plan a nice B&B vacation along the Mendicino Coast. :P

Or you can check out the Miyako Hotel that is a block away.

The consulate is in the center of Japan Town.

A good reason for me to take my Yu to Washington, DC or NYC on a vacation in a few years.

Dan a friend of mine from the area went to Toronto and renewed it. No problem. She went with a friend who also got visa for china. I believe they wanted some extra $ to do it the same day (travel visa for china )

This is the only website I can find that'll handle a Chinese visa extention. VisaRite is no good anymore and the only other way is to go to the embassy or consulate in person.

This is the note I like from the website! :D

"Your passport expired less than a year or will expire within a year."

Hardly any Chinese passport services out there but plenty of Chinese visa services!

I just talked to a guy from the passport renewal/extension website posted above.

They'll do the passport thing for you and the fees are reasonable but you have to send in the Chinese passport along with the greencard and a recent passport style photo.

Also the Chinese passport application form (in Chinese) and the order form.

The guy said they have a different mail-in address than the one on the order form, something like 5117 Hillyer St.***

I haven't looked for the new address on the website yet but he said it is there.

Sounds like a good deal. It sure beats travelling 300 miles to the Capital!!!

I can only do my wife's and not my stepdaughter's since my wife has her GC and my stepdaughter doesn't.

Carl, double check that info. SF no longer has mail service, but I think you can still use a visa service to extend an unexpired passport. To renew, you must go in person. That has been the case for quite some time. I'd get ahold of one of the visa services and see if they offer a passport extension.

Believe me Don the wife and I poured over the consulate website as well as anything I could find on the web. The law changed Jan 1st.

Oops, you missed the last train! According to <<Chinese Passport Law>>, effective January 01, 2007, Chinese Passport extension will not be performed any longer. Instead, applicant must apply for new passport in person at the Chinese Consulate. For details, please contact with Chinese Consulate directly (FYI: Tel: 212 244-9456 ). VisaRite can only help those applicants who are either under age of 12, or over age of 65, or those who are unable to travel to due to medical reasons, to renew their passports by mailing application directly to VisaRite.
