tywy_99
Somewhere here I posted about the same question you are asking. I'll try to find it. My first attempt failed. Anyways, go to the Florida DMV website and look for (keyword) 'lawful presence'.You will be able to find a list of primary and secondary documents needed to establish 4 things, one being "proof of lawful (or legal) presence. The EAD will serve this purpose but only as long as the EAD is valid.Another document that can be used to establish lawful presence is the I-797C receipt notice of the I-485. I think Fla. DMV says so but I don't quite remember. I know VA does and I think PA also say this. It is listed on the primary/secondary acceptable documents. Link to comment
MRMC
My understanding is the Drug and Alc is not waived for China but it is for Taiwan. Link to comment

MRMC
Also FL issues the drivers license until the date of expiration of the EAD etc. Thus, the most it is good for is one year. Link to comment
MRMC
This is from the website of the State of Florida. http://www.hsmv.state.fl.us/ddl/educate_sess.html Maybe China is now included. I would check. If not the course is online. Reasons for Attending Traffic Law and Substance Abuse Education If you have never held a regular driver license in any state, country, or jurisdiction, you must complete a Traffic Law and Substance Abuse Education course before applying for a temporary driving permit (restricted driver license) in the state of Florida. The driver education courses offered by some county school boards may substitute for this requirement. Please contact your local school board for further information. Link to comment

Am4wag
Not to hi-jack this thread, but in my state,SO needs to complete a drivers' training course-approved by the motor vehicle division (first time drivers). So,I'm seeing that her english ability is going to have to come first..........and the actual written test for a drivers' license IS available ONLY in english and spanish.......no provisions for chinese. We also used the lowest priced traffic school in Florida last fall, 2006 for both the drug and alcohol, and the learners permit. This was a very efficient way of learning, because your Chinese partner can take practice tests as many times as needed, and study and test at their own pace. It really can give a feeling of accomplishment if the American can stay out of the way while they learn. Once they pass, you can take the online certificates to the Motor Vehicle department, along with all other appropriate paperwork, i.e., marriage license, green card, US visa, I-767, etc. Link to comment
