Rage against the Machine!

Recommended Posts

I always like to play a game with my SO... ask her odd things like.. would she date someone shorter than her, would she date someone who spends more time making themselves look good than her, etc etc. Of course, being such a kind sould that she is, she always says yes within reason until I asked her if she would date a man, who was excellent in every way, but he was Japanese. To put it subtly, she rattled off a few sentences worth of filth that translates loosely into "NEVER".

I don't have a problem with this and I'm definitely not going to give her a lecture on equality or ethnic prejudice, but I'm wondering if everyone else's SO's hate Japanese equally as much? If so, do you think it's due in some way to the government censorship?

Edit: oops, just realized there's a very similar thread about this that Dennis started. Sorry for the repost.

"Of course, nobody expects China to forget the past. The war launched by Japan's militarist leaders killed an estimated 20 million Chinese. During the Rape of Nanjing in 1937-38, soldiers butchered 300,000 civilians, according to Chinese figures. Most Japanese are aware of what happened but their society has never engaged in the type of introspection common in Germany after the Holocaust. Carefully worded official apologies have landed far short of the five-star kowtow demanded by Beijing, senior Tokyo officials occasionally deny atrocities and just last April a new government-approved textbook written by right-wing groups downplayed the wartime brutality visited on civilians."

China fans the fire of anti Japanese sentiment to stir up nationalist fervor. Yes Japan should make a better appology but the war has been over for 60 years. Hardly anyone alive today actually fought in it. I also find it ironic that so much is said about Japanese inflicted casualties but very little mentioned about the casualties inflicted on their own people in the cultural revolution. I have read estimates as low as 17 million and as high as 38 million.

I don't hate Japanese. I just don't buy or use the products of Japan. I have a pool of friends who will beat me up if I buy any product of Japan. If any of my relatives date a Japanese, I'll just forget her/him forever.

My 18-year-old daughter told me a story: A Chinese American noticed there were so few books in the libraries about the war between Japs and Chinese during WW II so he wrote a book recording Nanjing Holocaust. While writing the book, his hair fell off. He committed suicide after finishing the book: he was feeling the pain, struggle, moaning of the whole nation of Chinese people. 60 years, but Chinese people still feel the pain.

My cousin's wife is from north east China. She described 2,000 people from her village captured by Japanese for bacteria testing - it's much worse than death or gas chamber.

Government owns the media. Chinese people who got information through regular source in native language like TV or newspaper are not aware what Mao has really done to Chinese people.

it seems everyone needs someone to prejudge....

its a human thing....

whether its a black or white thing or a Japanese Chinese thing.

or a even something as old as Israel and Pakistan, it will always exist.

this does not make it right

its hard to stop the vicious circle even if one individual had nothing to do with what grandpa did or was told to do.

throw a stick in the spokes and be someone¡¯s example stop spreading the hate.

Growing up with hatred around you, of course you will learn to hate as well.

the only way this will ever really stop is if we are invaded by some alien race and we finally realize the truth that we are all brothers on this rock.

When I was at school, I was always taught being friendly to Japan. So it is not true that chinese government fans the fire of anti Japanese sentiment to stir up nationalist fervor.

And I did textile business with Japanese buyers for many years and made some $$$$$. My apartments,my car are all from that business. :D I have to say they have very good reputation in payment.

I have many friends who are working in Japanese company and making a better life than most chinese people.

But I start to reject Japanese products since I noticed those Japanese products in china market are not as good as they sell to North America and Europe. They sell junks to china. I have quit that business with japanese buyers also.

An American man will never understand why our chinese don't like Japanese. Japanese are very humble to western but arrogant to Asian.

My husband asked me "becareful ,don't say hateful things to hurt others" when I told him on the phone I was writting this post. Hope I didn't? If I did, he would spank me.

Everybody here has good points and has missed some points as well from what I understand.

As I have heard from a japanese american, he was taught that what they did in china never happened, and the attack on pearl harbor was in responce to us dropping nukes on japan and I never saw this myself but a good trustworthy friend of mine went to pearl harbor on december 7th last year and said he saw japanese there celebrating the bombing of pearl harbor.

I worked for GM for 30 years and in 1984 we had opened a new plant in Lake Orion, MI. where I was employed and some big shooters from toyota came through on a tour, I and another employee personaly observed one taking pictures with a not so well hidden camera and one was caught stealing some parts, both were escorted to the door by security.

My grandmother said my dad was a deacon in the church never cused and never drank before his ship picked up wounded and dying Marines at Guadal Canal, he never went to church again and my grandmother didn't tell me this untill after my dad cussed me out for joining the Marine Corps and started drinking even heaver.

So deep down inside I have a little animosity myself.

These things are not indictments of all japanese but knowing these things makes it easier to understand why many Chinese do not like them.

My SO's Home town of Fushun, China has a Memorial to the 3,000 men, woman and children who where murdered by the Japanese Army in one day! Their raping of Nanking in 1937 plus the Chemical & Biological warefare experiments on the Chinese population by these so called heros did in China. Yea it would be hard to forget what the Japanese did in China. Look at our own Pearl Harbor, The Phillippine Death March in 1942, the beheading of unarmed American and Allied prisoners of war and The Kamakaze attacks by the Japanese. By the way a lot of Americans have not forgotten either about the Japanese.

This issue will only fester further untill the japanese government issues a formal statement acknoleging what really happened and making a commitment against such actions.

They can not nor would I expect them to apologize, most of the ones responsible are dead, they can't apologize for what there ancestors did any more than I can apologize for my ancestors role in slavery and racisim but I can recognize that it was wrong and I can make a commitment to remain vigilant to insure that it will never happen again.

I think this is the only logical course of action that could lead to a meaningfull healing process.

Now knowing Japans warring past how many here support Japan doing a preemptive strike on N Korea, I am sure you read the news about this. I can't see any Asian nation standing by the sidelines if they did. I do believe Japan stands alone in Asia, Because of their past actions they don't have the best relationships with their neighbors.

Japan doesn't have the military capability to wage a protracted war against any of their neighbors. It is written into their constitution that they can only have a small defense force. They are pretty much dependent on the US for thier defense. Most of the Japanese I have met are anti war and anti miltiary.

The war mongers are dead, the country's political system is completely different. Japan is more interested in doing business than waging war.The people in power today have little recollection of WW-2.

I don't condone their war time attrocities any more than I do Germany's. My point is, the war has been over for 60 years. Time to move on and quit holding a grudge. Bigotry and hatred never accomplish anything.
