SallyHon
Guys, My wife is K3. What should I do? I need to get my wife the SSN as soon as possible so that I can put her on my company's medical insurance program earlier. Which way is faster, file I-765 alone to Box 7218 Chicago, IL60680-7218 or file I-765 with I-485? Thanks a million... Link to comment
MRMC
I filed the AOS with the EAD. I think that is the best way to do it. Link to comment
SallyHon
Thanks, MRMC. I am in Michigan. Based upon the processing dates, the local USCIS (Detroit) is slower than NBC. Is it true that the I-765 will be processed at NBC if filed alone. and will be processed by the local USCIS if filed with I-485? Am I right? Link to comment

NY-Viking
I think the general consensus is filing together is faster (it was fairly quick for us ...), but filing the AOS first and then filing the EAD ELECTRONLICALLY (on the website) has seemed to have worked pretty quickly for some people. Question, though, we were K1, so maybe the process is different, but can't you get the SSN without filing either? In our case, we just went down to the Social Security office with her valid I-94 and got one about a week after arrival. And also, I seem to remember reading some posts about putting a temporary "dummy" SSN on work forms for medical benefits while you await the actual number. Do a search for SSN or medical insurance. Randy W
K-1's can get the SSN since they have employment authorization for 90 days. Without employment authorization, you will need a letter from a government agency which explains why they need for you to have one. K-3's do not have the work authorization. The dummy number that has been accepted by some insurance companies who only need to fill in the blank is 000-00-0000. Link to comment
david_dawei
I "e-filed" my EAD... In my opinion, if done correctly, this is the fastest method... I also have a theory that this will speed up the GC as well. You have to wait till you get the I-485 NOA1 to e-file EAD... but this is the same if you were to file afterwards anway. SO you lose some days on waiting for NOA1, but you gain it back because as soon as you are finished with the e-file, you get to IMMEDIATELY call and schedule your biometrics. (You should immediately also mail the supporting documentation to keep it all moving-- I waited over a week to do this, so my EAD could of been faster). The reason I believe that this could speed up the GC is because the scheduling of the biometrics is often a long wait, and e-filing bypasses this wait (at least when I did it)... By getting your EAD biometric set, you should also bring your I-485 NOA1 and ask them to do this biometric at the same time.. some have reporting them doing both when you show up with both papers... There's nothing to lose by bringing the I-485 NOA1 and trying to do it. Here a post I did on the topc.. http://candleforlove.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=14653 I filed as a K1.. so read my comments carefully in case something does differ for k3... Call NBC as needed as well... Edited June 11, 2006 by DavidZixuan (see edit history) Link to comment
SallyHon
Thank you very much, guys. I e-filed my wife's I-765, and got the confirmation receipt. On that confirmation receipt, it says "you will be receiving a biometrics appointment notice by mail with a specific date, time, and place where you will have your fingerprints and /or photo taken". However, I followed David's advise, and called the USCIS (1-800-375-5283) to see whether I can make a biometrics appointment by phone. Well, they did let me make the appointment for this Saturday. I further asked whether my wife can do her biometrics for her I-485 or not, they told me no...we need to wait for the notice for the I-485 biometrics appointment. Another thing I got a little confused is that on the e-filed I-765 confirmation receipt, it says "DO NOT mail photos or copies of identification unless requested to do so by BCIS". Does this mean that we should not send the two photos along with our supporting documents? Thanks again... Link to comment

In the end, this will speed up your GC, since you'll get in the biometric faster ; and that would make me 3-for-3 Anyway, that's been my theory on why to e-file, to speed up the GC, particularly if it's in a dead area like orlando ----- Mail the supporting doc ASAP... ignore the "DO NOT..." You should note the mailing address on the printout.. you can see mine as part of the sample EAD cover letter I wrote for supporting documents I mailed... ---------- I-765 Support Documentation for e-filing Receipt Number: MSCxxxCover Letter For [ Chinese National] , Axxx [ Chinese National] [ Address] National Benefits CenterAttn: E-Filed I-765P.O. SallyHon
David, Our local USCIS office is in Detroit... We sent our supporting documents to the National Benefits Center (E-filed I-765) on the same day we e-filed I-765. However, we didn't include the two color passport photos since the e-filed confirmation receipt tells us not to mail photos (and we followed their instructions)...Will this cause problem or delay? It's really confusing! Should we send the supporting documents again along with two color passport photos? Thanks! Link to comment

You will receive a notice in the mail from the USCIS that will provide you with your USCIS-scheduled appointment for capturing biometrics and photographs at an Application Support Center. You MUST bring the following materials to your biometrics appointment, or processing of your Form I-765 will NOT be completed at your scheduled time: Biometrics appointment notice. Photo Identification. Acceptable kinds of photo identification are: Passport or national photo identification issued by your country, or Driver’s license, or State-issued photo identification card. Sallyhon: Since you have the biometric appointment, nothing will delay that... usually the problem is upon review of the initial received paperwork, they issue an RFE (for something missing) and the biometric might wait on this... Based on Ty's info, I'd just bring them to the biometrics... Link to comment
