ATM use in Nanning

Recommended Posts

Question is for those who have SO's in Nanning. I sent my SO a VISA Debit Card from advice I read on another thread. My SO has attempted to access it two times without any luck getting a balance or money. I have called my bank,Wachovia, and was told the card is activated, money is available, and no security issues. Both times she has tried using the card at the Bank of China. My questions are; has anyone tried using their debit card at the Bank of China in Nanning and would anyone know what system/logo the Bank of China is hooked up with ie; INTERLINK or NYSE or PLUS systems. I ask my SO to use the card at bank machines that have one of those logo's and she said yes, Bank of China ATM machine has the VISA logo on it, with another four or five card symbols. It is frustrating trying to explain the other symbols that are necessary to complete any transaction. Also, she says that Bank of China is the only bank in Nanning that excepts international VISA cards in their ATM's. It is becoming very frustrating on both ends. I am ready to go back to sending Western Union. Thanks for your help

Richard,

does your bank show the attempted access and subsequent denial? If the card has been activated they will have a record of every attempt to use it. You might call them and see what they say...

She may not be sure on its proper use. She might try asking a clerk at one of the banks to help her with it.

Jesse, thank you for the advice. I called Wachovia and they said yes. They can see how many times she has tried to access. Therefore the card is activated and the magnetic strip on the back is find. Wachovia thinks that the Bank of China does not except PLUS System or she maybe entering the information wrong. SO says she is getting a message that my bank has cancelled the card. Wachovia says that the message is "Transaction Cancelled - Not able to verify account". Funny, I think the previous two sentences should go into the thread dealing with the different meaning of the English/Chinese language. I know if I was there I could figure this out. She must be entering wrong information

Chef - Maybe you could offer to have a Chinese friend who is NOT with the bank call her and work with her to figure out what the problem is. This would work especially well if she has a cell phone, and they can talk while she is at the machine.

BUT - if you DO have to go back to WU, are you aware that the fee is MUCH less if you take CASH to an agent location (grocery store or wherever)? It's only $12 or $14 that way (I forget which).

I just called WU and was quoted electronically almost $50.00. :D However, when I talked to an actual person on the phone the charge was $14.00.

I used Bank of America debit card when in Nanning as well. Only at Bank of China. Was charged $3 USD per use and could withdraw up to 2500 RMB. It appears that user error may be possible. There were 3 different ATM's to use. She may not be using the correct ATM machine.

It turned out that she had asked for a cash advance, instead of a withdrawal. No more problem!

Excep in Yulin.

yes Chef i think that could be a problem...

there was at least 3 different atm's in each bank i went to and bank of america card was only good for one of them....in other words only one was a "plus" atm machine

tell her to look on the back of the card and be sure the logo on the back (the plus logo) matches the particular ATM "plus" logo

I had a similar problem when I mailed an ATM card to my SO in Nanning. What I did was did an online such for ATM locations.

The card I gave her was from Huntington and was on the Cirrus network.

One site that does this for Cirrus is: www.mastercard.com/cardholderservices/atm/

I just searched for Nanning China and then sent her the information for bank locations.

I also had nothing but trouble trying to use my bank card in Bank of China ATMs in Nanning. My card is on the cirrus, plus and just about every other system but either it would only let me have 100 yuan or nothing at all. I always ended up going inside and seeing the teller. I also tryed the prepaid IKOBO system which was an even worse nightmare. I ended up going back to good ole reliable Western Union where I can send up to 1000 dollars for 16 bucks if I take the money down to my neighborhood Safeway store where they have a WU office. It also lets them take the money in dollars so they can get a better exchange rate. I know others have used bank cards at ATM machines in China but in Nanning it has always been a problem for me.
