  1. i am curious about this as well! mao mao is still on vacation with his family... maybe awhile before he can get to a computer I would imagine. B) Yeah, Dylan's right. Jie's family here is turning this into quite a celebration. More and more come down to Guangzhou to celebrate with us and see her off. And we went to ZhuHai for a few days, since the Visas were going to take a little longer because of Labor Day. As for staying at the Yang's. Honestly, you (or your lady) are staying here for the help and the convenience of being right next to the consulate, and the experience they have with helping all the previous people through here. The Yang's a super nice people, they have a new baby now, they accompanied us to the hospital for the medical stuff, no charge, and answered many of Jie's questions, putting her mind at ease. Both Jie and I were well prepared I think, but those last minute jitters got to her a little. As to the room, well, it wasn't the Hyatt. In fact it was pretty bad to be honest, so we moved to a different room. It wasn't the Hyatt either. We stayed here for the only reason we were even in Guangzhou. Now, on with the rest of our lives! As an aside, I have the habit now of checking the ceiling above the bed for any holes left by a hammer drill. So far, I haven't seen any. But I keep looking! Jeff
  2. OK, I have to ask somebody here this for Jie. She typed this in Chinese, and it was correct, but when she posted, it had a lot of characters changed to something else. When we tried to edit the post, all the characters were right. Am I the only one seeing it wrong, or are we doing something wrong? Please advise. Oh, BTW, we are using her sister's laptop. It's got Chinese Vista on it. Internet access is still intermittant. Jeff

  4. Hey thanks for all the well wishes and congratulations guys. I was just as nervous as everybody else is through this process, but it was all the info and help here in Candle that really helped me prepare, and helped me help Jie prepare. So I just did like we all do, and I think I'm quoting Tsap "prepare the best you can, then role the dice". So, now we're just waiting for the Visa's and that first plane ride home! Oh, and did I mention it's hot here? Jeff
  5. Hey all, Sorry for the slow reply. The internet service is intermittant here now. We went upstairs for the interview 8/28, and I waited in the coffee shop until 11:00 am. She came down with her son all smiles! We got Pink! She had a very easy interview. It only lasted about 10 minutes, he just asked her a few questions, didn't look at anything but my taxes, and some pictures. Now we're just waiting for the Visa's! Oh, and it's real hot here! Good luck to everyone else waiting for their interviews. Jeff
  6. Thanks for the info David. Me and Jie will be there in a couple of weeks, so reports like this always help a great deal. It kinda gives us an idea what's going to happen, so we're not going into it blind. Congratulations! Jeff
  7. Is the ACH still only on Fridays? Or is it a different day also? Our interview is on Wed, and I'll be there on Monday before the interview. Mondays 2:30 - 3:30. Get there at 2:00 Jeff
  8. Hey Congratulations David!!!
  9. My first trip to China, we stayed at the Yang's. It was nice, but I never met them. This trip for the interview, Jie made arrangments to stay there again, and has talked to them on the phone several times. We're not even there yet, and he answered several of her paperwork questions, and offered to go over it with her when we get there. That's pretty awesome in my book. Jeff
  10. [dumb questions] So, is American Citizens Services the same as the American Citizens Hour on Mondays from 3 to 4? It was 2:30 to 3:30 and they recently changed it right? Will I need to make an appointment for ACH now? [/dumb questions] Jeff Yep, I think they are two different things, ACH has to do with petitioner's questions regarding an immigrant visa case. American Citizen Services has to do with other state department things like replacement of a lost passport, or adding pages to a passport, etc.. http://guangzhou.usembassy-china.org.cn/ap...ices030708.html If ACH had changed the IV unit of the consulate would post it here: http://guangzhou.usembassy-china.org.cn/iv_announcement.htm Thanks Guys! So I see from the link ACH is still 1430 - 1530. I am trying to remember where I read the other. Too many things to keep track of, to few brain cells to do the keeping track. Jeff

  12. Had the same problem around here. A friend of mine with a decent sized pond on his property got some ducklings from Tractor Supply. He kept them in a caged area until they were bigger, then let them loose on his property. The idea was just to have them in his pond. He started out with about 10. The coyotes descovered them, they didn't last a month. Jeff
  13. Oh wow, I found it. It was page 178 and 179 of the May 2008 special issue of the National Geographic magazine. The whole issue is dedicated to China. There are some really good articles in it, and one in particular I liked about the Dong minority group, if only because Jie is Dong. Jeff
  14. They've already started http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/7/78/Small_sand_castle.jpg I seen a picture recently that I wish I could find now. It was of the great wall, but if the caption didn't say that, nobody would ever know it. It was the western part, but it looked like little more than a rift of sand piled in a line as far as the camera could see. I guess they still got some restoration work to do yet. Jeff
  15. You better bring your camera with you and savor those first photos of your family in America... and Oklahoma! You bet!!! We're pretty excited! We'll pop in on Wendy when were in GUZ, and if/when the GUZ gods smile on us, we'll pop in on you too! You're the one that's seems to be quite the shutter bug around here, so maybe you can document the event for posterity for us??? See ya later, Jeff
  16. Jie is from Liuzhou, I'll ask her. Over the course of the last two years I've met quite a few women from Liuzhou in one stage or another of getting here, or are here already. I think I only vaguely remember her telling me about one lady having trouble. The rest are pretty straight forward success stories. Hope mine is too! I'll be leaving here 8/13 to head over there for the interview, so we're pretty excited! Jeff Great news on the interview, I wish both of you good luck. As far as the details of the case, I have none but will ask next time we chat. To me the baby is the kicker, Perform a DNA test, if the USC is the father, grant the visa, end of story Jim Well, I just finished my nightly chat with Jie. I asked her about your story. She said she hadn't heard about it, but reiterated the stuff I already mentioned. She knows several ladies already here, I've met some too, and there are others in the visa process somewhere. So, ... just because we didn't hear about it doesn't mean it is possible, but I know that Jie sometimes asks me about things that she's heard that she thinks are incredulous. Rumor mills abound, and it's easy to get excited about things when you're worried about your own outcome too. Thanks for the well wishes on the interview. We're just in preparation mode now, and I'm pretty excited about seeing her again, because it's been since New Years I was there last. Jeff

  18. I could buy duck chicks in Tractor Supply here. Just grow 'em up from pups! Don't know if you have that chain there or not, but the duck stamp on your hunting license should work pretty good too. Oh yeah, and I can buy a roast duck in the asian market here, already cooked for $12.00. Seemed a little high so I haven't yet. Jeff
  19. One thing I noticed is that a lot of nine and 10 year old kids there are now almost as tall as their adult moms. Jie's friends all have kids and it is interesting to me to just look at the dispairity between the sizes of the generations. Your dead on about the kids and the KFS's MickeyD's. Few parents, wall to wall kids, no tables free, and so expensive! As to the fat thing? Comapred to the US certainly not, but by Chinese standards maybe. Jie is 5 nuthin' maybe 105, but her mom says she is fat! At one big New Years dinner there, Jie was sitting next to me, and her mom was on the other side of her, and the rest of the family squeezed in around the table. They were talking and I could see it looked to me like her mom was scolding her and I could see her mom nodding toward me while she was talking. I got worried because I thought I was doing something wrong. After they finished Jie looked at me and said "eat more slowly". (I was already finished by this point) I asked her why, and she said her mom scolded her because the "big american" already finished eating, and she was still eating (just picking really) and that she was getting fat! Then she tells me again, "so you eat more slowly!" I guess that's one way to handle it! Jeff
  20. Wow Darnell, that sounds like it should work! If your antiques made it ok, I hope Jie's things will too. It certainly sounds secure. I'll talk with her tomorrow about the antique dealer/glass blower suggestion. Now, anybody know the chinese word for "antique dealer"? That's a good idea Carl about letting her know the very real possibility of something getting broken, as it's not just about the box and ships, it's the wine too. I'll have her talk to some of the folks Darnell suggested, locally there, as they'll wind up being the ones to pack it I'm guessing. Those are good suggestions, thanks for the help. Jeff
  21. Yeah, I think you're right. I was trying to break it to her gently (no pun intended) by way of the family celebration before she comes here, but that was a no go. She just said to me, "you are clever, you will think of a way". I got news for her, I really ain't all that clever. And I really don't want to take a chance on it breaking enroute. It is really pretty, looks all hand blown. Some parts are really intricate. She lives in Liuzhou Guangxi, not to far from Guilin. Jeff
  22. OK, since you asked this question, I'll horn in on your thread and ask a similar one. (hope you don't mind if you do, really sorry ) When I went to see Jie last time (New Years) she showed me a most beautiful rose wood box. It was about 10(ish) inches high, about 3(ish) feet side to side and 2(ish) feet front to back, sort of a display case (lite on the ish). When she opened it, it had three hand blown glass sailing type ships (each fairly good size, you can imagine from the size of the box) that were actually decanters. The jib boom was the poor spout on each. They looked fairly delicate, like they wouldn't take much bouncing around, even though the inside of the box was silk lined, cushioned, and each "ship" had it's own inset for it to lay in. Even the masts and sails had some glass rigging to add to the effect. They are really beautiful. There was a clear liquid in each "ship" decanter. She said it was "wine". I didn't sample any (in case anybody's wondering). She indicated that this is a prized possession, and she would really like to bring it to the US (I can understand). Now, I've read the threads about shipping square boxes that got here round, etc, etc, and it obviously won't go through security in a carry on (size aside), and checked bags treatment probably isn't much better than shipped boxes. I suggested we have a celebration with the family, and drink the contents, then try the carry on route, thinking the value was purely in the "ships" and box. I was met with "Ni bu dui!" Apparently the "wine" is special, and it's going to come too! Anybody know how to go about getting it here? Intact? (operative word) She didn't tell me how much it was worth, just expensive! Jeff
  23. I agree! But when I visited Jie, her son who is 10, loves KFC there. He insisted on going there one day, and pestered for a while. Jokingly, I said to him "KFC bu hao", and he promptly stick out his lower lip. Needless to say, we went. The menu there is different than the menu here, but boy the prices were sure the same! It's was expensive! I do like the little outside windows all the Mickey D's in China have, where you can walk up and get those little soft icecream cones. Apparrently everyone else there does too, because they always had a big line. They couldn't crank out those cones fast enough. Jeff
  24. Thanks for the heads up guys. We'll do it. BTW, since I was sittin' there and saw it on the webcam with my own eyes, ours came EMS. I saw the big letters all over it. And, ... I guess I'm in the "56" group? As in, GUZ200856xxxx? So, what's a good guess for a possible interview date??? Jeff
