  1. I've never seen anything official saying that a child has until the age 18 to keep both passports. I've searched here and people say it, but I can't find any information. Our local PSB says this isn't the case, but they often don't know the law very well, either. I'm confused on when to use each passport when traveling with two passports. This means that if flying through Japan, I have to leave enough time in the middle to clear Japanese customs? And when I enter Japan, I enter with my daughters US passport (and then leave with the same US passport)? Has anyone ever traveled on two passports that can give me specific details? Thanks again!
  2. Our daughter just got her US passport (she's been considered a Chinese citizen since birth, since she was born in China), and now we have to decide how to proceed. I know that legally she can't keep both because the Chinese don't allow this. However, she lives in China and she goes to school in China, so giving it up would be a headache. I know that many people keep both passports secretly, but I've been searching on how to do this. I know that it involves a trip to a third country when traveling between the US and China, but I don't understand the logistics. For example, if I cross the border by land from Shenzhen to Hong Kong, how does this work? Does she need permission to travel to Hong Kong in her Chinese passport? Will it look strange because her US passport has absolutely nothing in it? Another question... If we book flights to the US from the mainland, do we actually have to go through customs in the middle country to make this work? For example, can we fly from Beijing to Tokyo and then to the US without going through Japanese customs or do we have to go through customs to make this work. If anyone has any experience with this, I would appreciate the help. I've tried searching the forum, but I can't find specifics. Thanks, Socks
  3. This is exactly why we don't want to get the US passport (yet, at least). Sure, there are a lot of expats in China that do have both secretly, but then you have to deal with getting visas to a third country to go through. Another quick question for anyone who is out there. I sent an email to the embassy in Beijing. Do they usually respond? Also, do you know when you buy the telephone card to schedule the appointment for visas? Can they answer visa questions or are they just there to give you a time? Thanks so much for all of your help!
  4. Yikes... That would not be easy! Just to clarify. The baby has one American parent and one Chinese parent. She could get a US passport (but we don't want to go that route until she is older or we move from China). I hope someone has better news?! Thanks in advance! I hope my question was clear enough. Not sure but, I think what I have read here before you might need to get a DNA test to prove you are the parent of the child. That is if you are the American citizen and wish to travel to US with Chinese born (non US citizen). I am sure others will chime in about this with better ideas. Good luck
  5. I hope someone here can help me! I've tried to search, but I don't really know how to search. We (Chinese citizen and American citizen) have a daughter who has Chinese citizenship and a Chinese passport. As long as we are living in China, we don't want to get her an American passport (we live in a pretty rural area, and they won't give us a long term L visa for her to live here, so we would have to leave China every 6 months). I want to travel to the US to see family with my baby (leaving my spouse in China) this summer. Traveling to the embassy in Beijing is such a hassle. Does anyone know if I can use the CITIC visa service for children to get a US tourist visa? I know that one of the requirements is that one of the adults has a visa to the US, but is a US passport good enough? I don't want to spend over 1000 RMB to get denied (and then end up taking the train for 40 hours to Beijing and pay another 900 RMB). Thanks in advance! I hope my question was clear enough.
