  1. Thanks guys. Yes it is a big new adventure, but I have felt that I have been stuck in a rut, so now I am moving on to new things. Don, after all of my Mandarin studies, now I have to learn Shanghainese Randy, I will be PM'ing you when I get in trouble. Robert, Actually I am older than 55. I have a teaching credential from California. The teaching position is with an international school so the age thing doesn't apply. With international schools only expat children can attend, no Chinese citizens' children are allowed. The curriculum is California based so I am familiar with it. The pay is actually better than I would be making teaching in the US, plus there is also the travel allowance, moving allowance, housing , utility allowance, retirement, health care, etc. etc. If you are thinking of teaching in an English language school, I would heed Larry's advice. Business has been slow, so a in March I started doing some research. I started with the DOS website. They have a list of International Schools. Then I did some research for International Schools on Wikipedia. After that I started sending out resumes to schools that were seeking teachers on their website Amaro, just stay with your plan. Get your education. Look for opportunities, and be flexible with your goals. Tsap, and the rest of you guys, thanks.
  2. Well, today I returned my contract for a teaching position in China. I signed on with an international school. They offered a pretty good salary and benefit package (tax free to me), so I thought what the heck: a free trip to China, a great job, learn to speak Chinese, and check out the pretty ladies while I'm there. How could I resist. I'll be headed over there next week.
  3. Welcome to CFL. Glad that things worked out in the end.
  4. When you went to China did you stay at her apartment? If you did, that could constitute the last place that you lived. It doesn't stipulate how long you lived there.
  5. I second what Carl said. That sure was a well written, and by that I mean understandable, article. Thanks, Marc.
  6. Southern China has been getting pummeled with tremendous amounts of rain. There has been flooding and deaths. Now there is a cyclone bearing down on Guangdong province which will probably cause more flooding. I know that bad weather hits all parts of the earth, but it seems that China has been getting more that its share this summer. My sympathy goes to those who will have to endure more hardship. http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/china/2010-07...nt_10100957.htm
  7. I've flown on Air China. I liked it: On time, low prices, and decent food.
  8. Congratulations! Did you meet any interesting people in the coffee shop?
  9. Aren't there some good tax benefits to working overseas? I had heard that the first $90,000 in foreign income is not taxable. Is that true?
  10. Just read on China Daily that Baidu is hiring American software engineers to work in China. Any of you guys qualified? If they pay in RMB, you will get the benefit of the rising Yuan. http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/bizchina/2010...nt_10035299.htm
  11. Another reason that things are processing faster is that their are fewer family based visas now. The following link is to the USCIS Ombudsman updates. Scroll down to "Unused Family Based Visas." It talks about unused family based visa, and that now LPR's are moving faster, and that some of the allocation for FBV's are being given for employment. http://www.dhs.gov/xabout/structure/gc_1221837986181.shtm#8
  12. We never heard back from Jay. That's not a good sign.
  13. Do they take PayPal?
  14. Well the Shanghai Daily is showing the Yuan at 6.7971 today. Not much of a change if you ask me. I think that the Chinese plan is to just put a little window dressing on the exchange rate, but really not make any kind of significant change.
  15. Wishing you great success! Perseverance succeeds. Your wife will be here before you know it. Have some of these for her
  16. Playing the Devil's advocate, maybe she just doesn't want to put in the time to learn English, so she told you a little white lie?
  17. Don't you just love these catch 22's that the DOS puts you through? Here are some suggestions: 1. email GZ telling them that the IRS won't attach anything to the certified transcripts, and ask GZ how to proceed. 2. Just have the transcript sent to GZ, and have them send one to you. Then send them a fax with a cover letter explaining that you had the IRS send them a transcript, and that you are following up by sending them a copy of the blue slip; your SO's name and case number; the transcript.
  18. Another Success Story. Congrats!
  19. I got that number from the article. When you look at the population as a whole 6 million is only .08% of the female population.
  20. This is just an update. A new article on Yahoo News says that the syphilis infection rate increased 30% last year. Over 6 million Chinese women are engaged in the sex trade. http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20100612/wl_as...thchinasyphilis
  21. Wow! Those are awesome.
  22. I wonder if there is any significance to the fact that both companies are foreign, that is, not Chinese ?
