  1. If you're in the NYC area and you and your wife can visit and book the trip with a Chinatown travel agency (sometimes they have very good deals). The agency will get you the visa as a courtesy for no additional cost than what the consulate will charge you for the visa. They run over to the embassy every week for their customers. Just remember to bring a passport picture with you for the visa. If you can download the visa application then you can have that filled out ahead of time, if not the travel agency will have the forms there. Just one reminder and it's that not all travel agencies have the same prices and deals. You have to shop around. So if you can spend half day to have lunch or dinner in Chinatown then you can shop for the lowest price tickets at the travel agencies.

  2. Congrats to the both of you!

Airport security is a strange and ever changing situation, especially at international airports. Most would try to have some form of security similar to the US, but not exactly.

My friend just returned to the US from a business trip to Hong Kong last week. Over here in the states they tell you to put all liquids and gels toiletries in a plastic one quart ziplock bag. Take the bag out of the carry-on and place in in a tray to be scanned. At the HK airport all liquids and gels in the carry-ons were being dumped in a huge trash can. You can't bring any liquids or gels on the plane. I'm sure each and every airport in China will vary slightly. In other words you'll probably take your chances on what they'll allow or not. If anyone has gone through the same airports Kenc will be going thru more recently than last December then please post.

  3. It will be a miracle if you can get an AP that quickly. I would come up with plan B.

Also remember that Americans will need a passport if flying to Mexico, Canada and the Carribean to gain entry. You can still drive to Mexico or Canada without a passport until 2008.

We're going down south for a little vacation and the quote below was with my airline tickets.

"As of January 8, 2007, United States citizens are required to have a valid passport to enter or re-enter the USA via airline transportation. Visit http://www.travel.state.gov for information on how to obtain a passport, including forms, fees, and how to locate a passport acceptance facility near you."

Whatever plans you'll make, have a nice and safe trip.

  4. The best stituation is to file for AP while filing for your AOS. This would give you the option of them returning if need be. If you can't afford it (like it was stated earlier - borrow the money). This way they won't feel helpless and chained to the US, thus causing them to regret coming here. This also builds trust between the two of you so that they know you've covered the bases. If you can't go because of work and etc., you have to let them go alone. Trust has to be built between the two of you. If you are insecure about the relationship what's to say that they won't be doing something while you're away at work. Love, trust and respect are similar. You have to give it to receive it. Family in the Chinese culture is stronger in rural areas than city areas because in rural areas several generations live together on the same property. City apartments usually don't have as much room, but most families live pretty close in the same area. Family members help each other in situations whether it's emotional, fiancial, etc. Any restriction on this can cause problems in the future. Supporting their wishes can go a long way in the future of your relationship.
