  1. I heard that during the most recent visit of President Hu to the White House, he brought up the issue of dual-citizenship to Obama. It seems that it's the U.S. who's unwilling due to fear of losing Chinese American talents. Let's hope that China will push further and harder, then maybe Obama will give in.

I don't understand what China would be pushing the US to do. It's article 9 of the Nationality Law of the PRC that states Chinese who obtain foreign nationality lose Chinese nationality. It has nothing to do with US law or Obama.

It is China who does not want dual nationality. That is the truth. Obama does not have to give in as the US does not prohibit this.

  2. I have a US passport and my wife has a PRC passport and US green card. We're researching the best place for our child to be born from a passport perspective.

We're looking at four options. We'd be interested in hearing feedback on whether our analysis of the child's passport situation in each case is correct.

Option 1: Born in the US. Child would only be able to hold a US passport.

Option 2: Born in Canada. Child would be able to hold both US and Canada passports.

Option 3: Born in mainland China. Child would have to choose between US or PRC passport.

Option 4: Born in Hong Kong. Child would be able to hold both US and HKSAR passports.

Born in China your child cannot ever be President of the US. Born in USA your child could.

  3. Hey Guys,

We are leaving for China tomorrow to visit my wife's family. We want to take 3 liters of wine, 5 packages of cigarettes, about six polo shirts, a few lipsticks as gifts for some of the family and friends. We will pack all of these things spread out between our two checked bags. I am pretty sure there should be no problems in terms of screening, but will be have any trouble with customs? What should we expect/do? Thanks as always.

I would go to the Duty Free Shop at the airport. It is alot cheaper.

  4. I applied for a Certificate of Naturalization last week for my step daughter based on my wife's naturalization. Today we applied for my stepdaughter's passport. They took her original Chinese birth certificate, custody document, and original green card. What happens when she is called for the Certificate of Naturalization interview as according to the passport clerk, as long as the passport is issued, the green card is not returned. What happens when they ask for my step daughter's green card at the N-600 interview. As long as the passport is approved, she will not have this permanent resident card.

  5. The whole family took off from work or school and attended. It was a great experience for all. It was a memorable experience. My wife got to register to vote. We will shortly apply for US passports for the wife and child. Thanks to all as this site has been very valuable and I am sure will be valuable for others. I may apply for the N-600 for my daughter but not sure. I know the passport is all that is required and not sure if any benefit to the N-600. Thanks again to all.

  6. My wife is scheduled to be sworn in as a US Citizen next week. Our daughter a Chinese citizen is a minor and was listed on the application as her daughter. Does her daughter have to be at the ceremony. She has school and may not be able to miss that day. My understanding is she becomes a citizen when my wife becomes a citizen and I then have to apply either for a naturalization certificate or passport. Am I correct?

  7. We applied for the 10 yr green card last March. Never recieved her NOA1 with the sticker to put on her GC, made an appt and got a stamp in July for a one year extension. The officer then said it wouldnt be the first time if he saw us next yeat at this time for another 1 yr extension! Great!

Still no word on the GC.

We were a month ahead of you and recently received the Perm 10 year card. It will be there in a month or so.

  8. Recently I was laid off from an in-house counsel position in the financial services industry. Since I handled immigration matters, I have decided that I want to help people with reduced fees who require legal assistance to complete forms and with hearings. My question is for those of you who hired attorneys. Where did you find your attorney? Did you use the yellow pages, a Chinese newspaper, etc. I am in Florida and looking for ideas on places to advertise. What did you look for in the advertisement? And did the attorney meet your expectations? Thanks for any replies.

  9. My family went on a cruise. We filled out the immigration questionaire online for the cruise line. I thought it would be smooth sailing. When we arrived to check in we had the following for my wife and daughter. My wife had her passport stamped with the I-751 since she never received the one-year extension letter. My daughter received two different one year extension letters. My wife had no problem. My daughter who is a child was almost not allowed to depart by the cruise line. They claimed the one-year extension letter extended her stay into the USA one year from her date of arrival. This of course makes no sense since my daughter had a recently expired green card with an extension letter only one month old at the time of departure. I explained this to them. They went from one employee to another stating that if they are not sure they can be fined. I explained the letter is clear that it extends the permanent resident card for an additional one year. After approximately two hours they apologized (nothing else) and allowed us to board. I guess if I was going to do this again, I would make sure all passports are stamped with the extension. Just my 2 cents.
