Chinese Comics?

Recommended Posts

When I was studying Japanese, it was often suggested to me to use Japanese comics (Manga) as an aid to studying the language.

Manga can come in age-appropriate titles, so us grown guys could find material meant for grownups, not children or adolescents.

I'm wondering if the same can be said for Chinese comics. It had occured to me to try finding Chinese language novels, but graphic novels or comics might be easier to follow for a student of the language.

Is it possible to find comics from the Mainland (for simplified script) that are interesting and useful as an aid for studying Mandarin?

There are lots of comics and easy reader type books around, and I have also found them useful for reading Chinese, but I have only found ones geared towards kids. Interestingly, the most popular comics I know of here are all translations - Labi Xiaoxin from Japan (about a mischevous little boy), Jiqi mao also from Japan (that blue robot cat), and Tintin (Dingding) from France. there are plenty of chinese ones but they don't seem to be as good.

I've tried novels as well, but so far the ones simple enough for me are pretty boring. If anyone else knows of some reading materials for adults that aren't too difficult, I'd be interested to know about them too.

I'll look around online today.

I saw some things on YesAsia.com, but I'm afraid they'll be from Hong Kong, thus be written in Traditional text and Cantonese collquial style. I'm hoping to read Simplified text in Mandarin colloquial flavor.

I'm waiting for an idioms book I bought from Amazon.com. Maybe once that's here, I'll have something to bite into.

I think it would be better if you just get them directly from China. Ask your wife to go to any local bookstore and pick up some books for kids. They have very simple characters and sometimes also have the pinyin. They are usually stories about animals... don't know if that's the kind of material you like... but if it's just to help study your Chinese it shouldn't matter too much. Then have her send them to you.
