Birds In Nanning?

In most of China, which is extremely cultivated and tamed, you won't find any wildlife- Xiao Ming saw a squirrel once and was so excited. China has been populated for too long- and it's true, Chinese people also like to put anything in their mouths that moves.... silkworms, anyone?

Wow! Amber, you got to try slikworms too???

I tried with my darling's parents in their home town. It was quite a unique experience for me. I have to say that I would like to try them again actually, since I chickened out so badly the first time (I tried a little, but could barely hold it down).

How did you enjoy the delicacy???

Lele:

I didn't actually EAT the silkworms- I am about the pickiest eater you've ever seen- I can't eat meat off the bone or fat or anything- I would rather be a vegetarian except it's so difficult in China. And I definatly can't eat fish or shrimp with the heads on them.

I was scared of this too. However, given that I do not eat any red meat, I decided that the heads were not so much of a problem anymore. This is really an issue when you travel inland and where the fish tend to be contaminated with mercury (and hence are not too edible).

Amber, be lucky, at least you live near the sea!!!

Can you get good korean/japanese food in Dalian like you can in Qingdao?

Oh those silkworms are weird. Apparently they are a northeastern specialty and being from Harbin, my in-laws served them right up. It is amazing to watch them squirming before they are cooked and think that you will have to eat them. I am picky too though, and although I pretended to try it, the truth is I put so little in my mouth that I couldn't even taste it. I do feel a little bad for not exactly accepting this part of their culture, but I just can't help it, its so gross!
