A new thought for when travelling

My SO was a bit surprised, to receive an "American Citizen Services Annoucement" emails from the Consulate in Shenyang. I would have loved to have seen the look on her face when she first saw this. :)

Registering my trip online had a new and interesting affect this time.

Lee, please explain how that happened.

When registering online I list my SO's address as my place of residence while in country, this includes phone and email address. DOS Travel Registration

They have a section where you can authorize the State Department to disclose personal information and in the section marked Other, you can specify an individual and contact information. As my fiancee she would not normally have any legal status or right to information from DOS if there was a problem while in China, this removes the initial block on information and also helps to demonstrate relationship.

And one other thing, I know the information is entered correctly and her name is spelled right. :D

It seems that registering may be moot...

The embassy in Beijing knew exactly how many times I had been to China and what days I entered and exited (except for when I one time went by land from China to Vietnam, they were off by a few days).

This all came out when the in-laws got their B2 visas!

Interesting...

I still vote for not wasting the time to go through this process...

However, to comply with local laws, registering with the PSB may be advisable, especially if you will be around for a while...
