The difference between China Z visa, work visa and residence permit

Seemingly every single expat working in China thinks they are in China on a Z visa. 

A Z visa allows ONE entry only, with 000 duration of stay, and requires that you apply for a residence permit within 30 days from the date of entry. The Z visa expires upon arrival - the residence permit becomes the operative visa. IF YOU ARE IN CHINA ALREADY, you DO NOT need another entry visa. You can directly apply for a residence permit at the PSB.
