FYI, officially partition, Chinese languages are divided into 10 language families(meaning nobody can understand the other from a different language family if they speak in dialect).
 👉But if you look more into China, it is much much more than that. For example, Zhejiang province（similar area as south Korea) has more than 88 different dialects. Most of them can be quite different so people cannot understand each other. 
📪During World War II,  Wenzhou dialect was used as a telegram coding language, because even the neighboring villages could not understand each other's dialects.
